The last six years I had a 1272Q ceiling mounted in a dedicated theater. With new sources and special HDMI to RGBHV converters, tweaks, etc.. I had gotten the most I was going to get out of it.
I installed the JVC RS40U and it is better than any CRT projector I have seen. Black levels are CRT quality, no pixel structure (unless you are < 1 foot from the screen), and hanging on the ceiling I can barely tell it is operating. I first set it up on the floor of the theater on top of it's shipping carton and I after powering up I thought the fan might not be working - it is VERY quite. It even has a "convergence" menu for the three panels - it is the CRT-phile's digital.
That being said, I still search E-bay and CL for a deal on a 9"er like a G90 every now and then. If I find one local, I will be sure to start a shoot out thread between it and the JVC. |
Ain't no thang, Mark - it happens. Some people around here seem to get defensive if anybody even remotely starts comparing CRT and digital... And Jeremy, well - he's always been an analog zealot and seems to have plenty of opinions about things he's never even seen.
Anyway, I too have had a CRT for many years... I think I bought my first 1271 in '01 or '02. At one point, I had three projectors at the same time: The 1271, a 1272, and a 1252. I re-tubed the 1252 just for the experience and sold it on craigslist. I sold the 1272 to a buddy (who I got hooked on home theater). I then sold the 1271 to another guy when I upgraded to a minty G70, which I loved dearly and used constantly for at least 3 or 4 years. I think I put at least 2500 hours on that machine in my time with it.
I always wanted to go out with a bang on CRT and have a Barco 909 or G90, but I just never found one that wasn't going to cost WAY more money than I was comfortable with. When a single green tube from VDC for a G90 runs nearly as much as an entire JVC - with a full warranty - it stops making sense, IMHO.
Ultimately, after being in many others home theaters and demo rooms, it was the noise that really killed CRT for me. I love movies and home theater - not CRT projectors - and I want an overall excellent experience. I'd sit in those other rooms and it would be so quiet. So, so quiet. Then, I'd go back to my room and fire up the CRT and listen to fan noise for two hours. I'd turn the projector off and breathe a sigh of relief from the fan noise stopping. I'd spent all this time and money to get great speakers, amps, sound treatments, and then screw it all up when I turned the projector on. The JVC is far from perfect, but neither was the CRT. It fixes the one thing I really hated about CRT, does what I want it to do, and the positives far outweigh the negatives.
Glad to hear you like the RS40!

What, it's OK for you to dish out all the anti-digital sh*t you want, but nobody can give you back any grief?

Thanks! You are spot on with the fan noise issue. I never realized how much the 1272Q was covering up all the low level sound details in a film. I watched The Thing on Blu-Ray and the DTS sound was spooky good - made me jump. The JVC has to be one of the coolest home theater items I have ever bought - right after my first CRT projector (1031Q) and LaserDisc player.
I have to say the digitals have come a LONG LONG way from the 1000:1 contrast ratio, screen door, LCD projectors I first saw years ago.

Crabb pretty much echoes my thinking. I am not as big on fan noise for audio. I just get sick of the elevated noise floor. That being said I am probably going to go out with the G90. This is mostly because I already have one. Like I said earlier I could live with the JVC and if the new lamp lives up to claimed performance then I could see myself grabbing one of those in the future.

Has digital reached the stage whereby it has surpassed crt in the areas of fade to black, low key scene, night scene? Which digital model maybe i would like to get one, If not i will trade off for the noise level which doesn't bother me at the moment.

Has digital surpassed CRT in absolute fade to black? Absolutely not. It's getting very close, but it's not quite there. If you care about fade to black more than any other picture quality attribute, then digital isn't for you. If you'd rather crush some blacks to get an absolutely fade to black, then digital isn't for you.
Low-apl? Here digital is getting close. If there is much light on the screen at all, then the good digitals (like newer JVCs) are very comparable.
Night scenes? If there are any point-source lights like bright stars or street lights or headlights, then the superiority of ANSI contrast (intra-scene) on digital really starts to shine (excuse the pun).
Let's compare JVC to something like a G90... They're worth very similar price-wise.
JVC pluses:
- Superior ANSI contrast
- Superior brightness for slightly larger screen
- Fully-resolved, sharp 1080p
- 24p without a processor
- Nearly inaudible
- Small, very flexible installation
- Two year parts and labor warranty
G90 pluses:
- Superior on/off contrast
- Very film-like picture
- Cheap ownership/operation
- Easily repairable
The comparisons are much closer with a 9" machine like a 909 or G90 or 9500 Ultra. But, if you have an 8-inch machine, then I maintain the only two things the CRT does better is absolute black and most film-like picture. In that case, I think the digital's positives far outweigh the negatives. But, that's for me. It's different for others.
There are plenty of positives and negatives to both technologies. The size and noise of CRT sucks, but if neither bother you, that's great. You're lucky because cost of ownership is stellar with CRT! You should absolutely stay with CRT as long as you feel it's right for you! On the other hand, if you want to do scope, you want something quiet, you have an 8-inch machine and you want something sharper, then you've got some options.

If you have a good CRT installed you can use it until the end of its life. Between an used 9" (Barco, Sony , Marquee, Runco) and a new digital, the only one reason to choose the first is the passion. They are more expensive $4000+ (need video processor $1500+ for best performances) and difficult to install.
