Hi Mac,
I got the crystal and installed it. ...It still doesn't work.
So I pulled the crystal and reversed the direction. ...Still no luck.
So does this mean it's the MCU (Master Control Unit)?

With the new crystal installed try this procedure again.
With the receiver plugged in press and hold these 3 buttons on the receiver for at least 5 to 10 seconds.
Standby/on, A/B/C/D/E and preset tuning right arrow. See if it turns on and what is in the display if it does.

I pressed (standby/on), (A/B/C/D/E), and (preset tuning right arrow). (10 sec)
I even whispered sweet-nothings to it.
But it doesn't do anything.

There is a slim possibility that some of the surrounding circuitry of the MCU could cause it but testing could be difficult. I don't know how much room you have there to make some tests while it is plugged in. Some points would be right on the MCU and you would have to be careful not to slip and hit multiple pins. Or I could give you a list of components to test for shorts on with your DMM. To be completely dead seems strange to be caused externally of the MCU but the possibility is there. It just depends how much effort you want to put into it.
Are there any numbers on the original crystal you removed?
