Gents,

the wife is griping about me dropping some cash on a red c-element and she wants to make sure it will not go dim. I have never heard of anything like that but thought I would ask. She is doing a bit of griping on cost and doesn't understand what a deal we got on the Vidikron Vision 1. For crying out loud!!!! I got a re-tubed Vision 1 with a Chief lift/mount and moome HDMI card all for 45 bucks. I told her we will have to pay for some things along the way and looks like this is one of them. She wants to know if the investment ever dies on the red and green c-elements.

Yes they do go dim. Tell her that I have the special C elements that don't dim for $3000. Smile

They do dim the light output a bit, but nothing that you'll notice.

Well I have one lined up for 349.00....sorry Curt!! So far that is the best I have found. I know they dim the light at around 6%. But glad to hear they themselves do not lose their tint.

I was joking! Smile They do dim the light output a bit, but seriously, you won't notice the difference. YEs, the C elements are expensive since they are discontinued. Your reds will definitely be a deeper color though.

I think you guys might be talking about 2 different things.

Depends on what you mean by "dim".

Tinted c-elements are used to filter the light output.

Tinted c-elements reduce the light output slightly. That much is true. That's because the purpose of the tinted c-elements are to only let a certain wavelength through so that you get the right "primary" colour. Other (slightly off) colours are blocked.

The tinting does not degrade or change over time. They do not filter more/less or reduce the light output more/less over time.

Kal

One additional note to Kal's comments: it's true the filtered elements reduce the light output a bit. BUT then you re-calibrate the CRT, effectively boosting the light output to make up for it. You MUST re-calibrate after adding the elements or your colors will be totally whacked. But after you re-calibrate, oooh, the colors... you'll love it!
