So I pulled a new to me G90 into my shop yesterday. I powered it up and got a totally garbled menu that could not be read. Some characters were legible, but they were not alphanumeric characters, they looked like something you might find in character map for Windows. I thought "this is strange" and did a factory reset. Problems went away and the projector seemed fine.

Today I go to fire up the projector and it won't start... throws tons of error codes that are different every time I try to power up. Yesterday I had pulled several of the D boards, the BA board, the YA board, and maybe others for trouble shooting another projector. I figured something didn't get seated right or connected back. An hour and a half later I am still scratching my head.

So now I think that it must be a power board issue. I try both power boards and still no go.

So I say what the heck and swap YA boards. Much to my chagrin the machine started and worked fine. I thought oh great, this had better not be a bad IC 421.

But then I look at the Dallas chip and realize that half of it is totally bulged up! The freaking battery must have exploded for some reason, but I have never seen this before. I'll try and take a photo of the chip later, it's unbelievable.

Luckily I had copied this Dallas chip some months back so I wrote it a new and everything is now fine.

Still seeing new things even after servicing these projectors for the past 10 years Smile

How old was the dallas chip. Original to the G90 or a replacement. If a replacement where did it come from? Reliable source?

Hi,

I'd like to see that picture too!
I could imagine that the chip inside the sealing failed and caused a short on the battery terminals. Thus the battery's energy was converted into heat and caused the deformation...

Actually that's pretty common with lithium batteries. I've seen Marquees bubble and also batteries out of RTI remote controls.

I blame the lead content of the solder! Razz

Yeah,

Another possible reason could be tin whiskers. Ever heard of that? I remember an interesting site at NASA dealing with this phenomenon. Should show up on Google when searching for the phrase. As a matter of fact I consider a significant percentage of "repairs" performed through reseating boards and chips to it. The movement breaks off the whiskers which cause intermittent shorts...
