Quick question. I am going to attempt to do my own calibration for my Sony pj. It was initially installed and calibrated by technician. Will I ever need to adjust more than settings through the remote to recalibrate. Ie will I ever need to remove cover and adjust settings via the adjusting screws? Not sure how much these drift over time & don't want to mess with anything unnecessarily .

Welcome to CRTs! You will likely be stunned by how helpful and knowledgeable folks are on here.

First - Is it already setup, etc. and wish to do a complete setup or just a calibration on color?

If calibration on color, stop reading here and check-out Kal's greyscale/color calibration thread and then see the specifics on G50s. You'll have more Qs then. If it is a complete setup, read on...

Second - If it is a complete setup and the machine is new to you -- whoa Nellie! I wouldn't mess with it at all until after you've read-up, especially if it was installed/calibrated by a technician. Spend an hour to 90mins reading the general CRT Primer/FAQ, the Setup Tips/Manuals, and documents for the G50 at the links at the top of every page on the site. There are bound to be threads if you search for noobs setting up a G50.

Third - Probably the most important thing to do first is to feed it a signal (1024x768 from a PC with a rgbhv breakout cable or perhaps dvd/br using the moome input) to see if it displays OK. THEN, simply move the machine closer/further from a wall to find out the distance it is in focus at. You might need to tilt it, etc to get the image mostly all in decent focus. IF this distance and screen size are close to where you would enjoy it, you likely will only have to tweak things a bit with the remote. IF you plan on deviating from that distance much, things will get a bit more involved.

FWIW, my advice is to just get familiar with it, walk around it, get it to where there is something tolerably viewable, and start to learn before you adjust anything.

See how it goes and let folks know. Also, depending on your location, there might be an enthusiast near you who might want to come and play.

There isn't much inside a D50 that you need to adjust. There is a set of focus pots that can be adjusted with fingers or with a flat screw driver. There is also the magnetic adjustments on the neck of the tube, but I would not be surprised if you don't need to touch them.

Skip the internal adjustments for your first setup. You will net to set the correct angle for the tubes/lenses to point and you will also need to adjust the lens flapping. Everything else is through the remote.

This machine is one I have had since new (about 10 years & I would guess 500 hours on it at the most) and is ceiling mounted. Last time I had it serviced was about 4 yrs ago. I just installed the Moome card the other day. When I did the projected picture was shifted to the left. I adjusted the pic using RGB shift and RGB size to get the picture centered and correct size. Found it works better using native input to detect size rather than any presets.
I did notice center convergence was a touch off so I adjusted that to perfect. However I notice the far edges of the adjustment crosshairs are off a little when the center is perfect. Is that normal or does it indicate further adjustment needed? My goal at this point is only minor image tweaking for perfection although I must say the picture is amazingly good right now so I am also happy as is.

The service guy I used advised me getting it serviced every year however that is expensive and this pj is used only a few times a week to watch a movie so relatively light use so don't want to go overboard on servicing if I can do minor adjustments to keep picture looking good myself. The color looks good as is. Overall I think the Moome card works really well with it.

In that case don't do any physical adjustments at all and don't open the case. Only do adjustments with the remote.

You can fix the convergence everywhere with the "ZONE" adjustment.

D50 should be serviced every 600-800 hours of running time to maintain the best possible image. You can go longer if you don't mind a little hit in performance. 2000 hours is about the longest you can go before the image starts looking really poor.

Hi guys,


also a quick question by me. About 1 year ago my Dallas chip got faulty. I bought one new changed the defect one.
As I already stated in another thread, it seems not just geometry/convergence setup was gone but color (?) setup too.
Means, i think picture is ok but not that good as before (just recalibrated the convergence). Unfortunately some time later i had to move to another city and didn´t use it anymore since then. Is a full setup needed by loosing the memory of Dallas real time clock ?

I read a lot about colorimeters and all the other devices. I now wanted to buy one here in Germany and really don´t know anymore which one to buy. I already had choosen the iDisplay Pro from x-rite without Chromapure but then saw some posts from users that it can´t be used anymore with CRT-Beamers.

Which one is the right for me between 100-250$ (about 200 Euro max.) Any advice would be welcome. !


PS: I know I just wrote superficially about the picture quality. It´s because after more than a year I get the chance to use it again and don´t remember the exakt error pattern. I´ve got the installation and service manual.
