Any recommendations for a calibrator in the San Jose or San Francisco area for my G90?

What questions should I ask when I talk to them?

Ask to see a report showing the improvements. Usually its a PDF generated by the calibration.software. Have your calibrator setup up all of your players and video processors (course you may pay more for this) and also have them setup all the resolutions you plan on using (you may also pay more for this to).

Guess I forgot to ask are you asking before they come out to calibrate or after they arrive at your house?

I hit SF two or three times every year and I am starting to plan a trip again now. Please email me for details and an exact quote.

Craig Rounds is the man you want! He is absolutely is the most knowledgeable man on the planet with the G90. If you want the absolute best picture that your system is capable of, he is your only choice. Craig is not only one of the top calibrators, he is also one of the top fault finding and board level repair guys available. We are extremely lucky to have him as part of our community here. Lumagen, Moome(HDMI Input Board), OPPO, Calibration Software Co.s, all use him for Beta testing before releasing a product to the public. He also helped develope and trouble shoot the 3D technology that made it possible to be implemented on our CRT based systems.

He came to calibrate my system and discovered a problem with my BA board. He got on the phone and within seconds was removing parts from the board that you could only see with a magnifying glass and replacing them by using the iron he packed for the trip. Within ten minutes, the issue was resolved and I was on my way to video nirvanna!!!!

I can't say enough about this guy. Book him and be done with it! You won't find anyone better!

110% agree with doc! Craig is the person you want working on your G90. Not sure what all you are looking for either basic or complete setup. Craig knows the G90 inside and out; literally. His equipment is top-notch.

As for the post from Phoenixed regarding before and after readings, I have all that information from when he worked on my projector, including info from the Lumagen.

I also just say your post about possibly upgrading your video chain. Craig would be able to help there as well. He is probably the most knowledgeable person with respects to the Lumagen product line; I am not sure you will find a better and user friendly video processor for the money.

Craig backs up his work and explains everything he does as he goes.

Trust me, you will be please.

Oh, forgot to mention, if you want 3D from your G90, again, Craig is the person that got the G90 to display the picture.

Once again, you will be amazed.

+1 for Craig. He is your best bet.

You should also be clear on what you mean by "calibration". What exactly do you mean? Craig would of course clarify with you but others may not.

Is it just a physical setup and convergence you're looking for? Or greyscale/gamma calibration? What equipment do you have in line with the signal (if any) to assist? Something like gamma would be hard if next to impossible to adjust without some anxillary equipment.

There are varying levels of physical setup too. Some will get right into the magnetics and do careful adjustment. Others will not go as far.

If you're looking for ISF calibrators, there are two types: Those that know CRT, and those that don't. Ask how many CRTs they've calibrated. If they haven't, walk away.

Actually, what are the OPs choices?

I couldn't find a website that enables me to find a "certified" ISF calibrator near me, but surely it exists. I'm thinking of like when I had to get a certified arborculturist...there were certified, board certified, etc. all with different specialties all within my area. Isn't there an equivalent?

From my perspective (with NO first-hand knowledge) the sense I get is that folks on this site have had nothing but great things to say about both Craig Rounds and Tim Martin. Again, my *perception* is Craig does mostly G90s and Tim does mostly Ehomes...but that could be wrong and I imagine both do both!

The only other names I ever recall reading glowing reports of (who do "setups" or "calibrations") are Ken Witcombe and William Phelps -- and I have no idea if they still work on CRTs. Question

Phelps would have been the go to guy in the Bay Area, but he's been out of the CRT calibration game for many years. Not sure if Ken is still offering this service. Cliffy should know.

I work on everything both digital and CRT. Over the past few years I have gotten lots more G90's than any other, and they are the most common CRT projector that I work on. I also have a G90 in my own theater room. I do tons of Marquee machines and some NEC and Barco.

Tim is Marquee only and I think he likes it that way Wink

Calibration is a fairly expensive proposition. To have a G90 fully calibrated with multiple memories for different resolutions/sources (1080p, 800p, etc.) expect to pay a considerable sum.

For example, let's say the calibrator is going to do a full mechanical and electronic set up; e.g. geometry, grayscale, astigmatism, etc. and you plan to watch both Blu-Ray and HD Cable programming, you are going to need multiple set-up memories to maximize your viewing experience. You also didn't mention whether you have a video processor in your chain. Assuming you don't have a video processor you will probably want the following:

-1080p/48 hz 1.78 aspect ratio blu-ray material
-1080p/60 hz for 1080i HD cable programming

If you plan to use a video processor like a Lumagen, you will probably want the following:

-1080p/48 hz 1.78 aspect ratio blu-ray material (maybe even 1080/72 hz)
-800p/72 hz for 2.35/2.40 aspect ratio blu-ray
-1080p/60 hz for 1080i HD cable programming
-custom video processor porch timings to eliminate raster ringing
-1:1 pixel mapping

On the low end expect to pay $1200 (if no video processor) and probably closer to $2000 for 3 memories, custom porch timings, etc.

All of this depends on your expectations and how much involvement you want to have in the process. If you are willing to learn how to do geometry, optical alignment and a few other things you can at least get up and running at no monetary expense and then bring in a pro to handle grayscale and other more complicated aspects of the set up.

I think THX is probably a better certification
