|
|
OK so I sold my G70 to my best friend who had a zenith up in his HT. The throw on the zenith was 108" The throw on my G70 for the same size picture was 128". Can he hang the G70 in the same place as the zenith which will give it an even shorter throw because of the longer chassis and not kill the PQ ? Could it be made to produce a 110" image and still be dialed in correctly ? Or not ? He seems to think it can, I am in the mindset that throw is a BFD. Also for consideration, that G70 was calibrated by Craig Rounds, Wouldnt it lose that beautiful image ?

No, it can't be done. THE Zenith is the only projector out there that has the cheap plastic short throw lenses. He has to move the front of the projector back by 20".

I believe he is under the impression that wherever he mounts it he can just adjust the size to fill the screen and then start dialing in the image from there.

Over the years I've had LOTS of customers think that. If he won't listen to you, then sell it and walk away.

He is my best friend. I want this to work out for him so he gets the best possible outcome. I think the issue is that he would have to change some things in his HT (that he just finished) and redo them. electrical outlet, reinforcing the ceiling etc.
My opinion is that if the PQ isnt good it aint much of a home theatre,it just a room with a really big picture on the wall like my gameroom. I get where he is coming from,I was overwhelmed when I got the G90 and thought there was no way in hell I was gonna be able to mount that thing with adjustment, But with help from my friends I made it ! He could too. Maybe I can get him to come to the forum and the experts here could talk him off the ledge so to speak.

You have maybe +/- 6" on that throw. Absolute max. YOu know the rules, make max use of the tube phosphor without overshooting, blah blah.

Well you can mount it in the same location as the Zenith and max the raster and whatever size the image is then just border the screen to look right. Which is easier, remounting the projector or bordering the screen?

I mentioned that to him, that he could go with a smaller image, but he wants to keep the 110" image.

Then the projector "HAS" to be moved. You can't make the image any larger then the tube face allows.

I will point that out to him. I dont know the terminology and have a hard time explaining myself sometimes. I think my only useful suggestion to him was to put the pj on the floor on a crawler and slide it back and forth it get the best image. I will try to explain what you said mac, THANKS!

Yep. He has to pick one: Smaller screen or move the projector back.
Moving the G70 is a short-term loss, (big-time) long-term gain. He just upped his picture quality and upgraded the experience massively. Why wouldn't it be worth it to spend an extra weekend in the short term moving the projector back the 20" or whatever it needs to be. He'll have the G70 hung up there watching it (potentially) for years.
I'd just tell him to suck it up. In the end, it will be well worth his time and effort. LONG after he's forgotten how much work it was to hang the projector, he'll be enjoying watching movies, football, or whatever else blows up his dress.

Here's how you explain it to him, Jeff:
The lenses are a FIXED focal length, which means the lenses make one specific screen size at any one throw distance. If the projector moves back, the image gets larger. If the projector moves forward, the image gets smaller. Period.
The "SIZE" adjustments are for very small (i.e. a couple of inches) adjustments to the size of the picture. Besides, his problem isn't needing the picture smaller (which he could do, while tolerating the decreased resolution, decreased brightness, and increased tube wear). In his case though, he won't be able to make the picture larger. It will be smaller than he wants. Period.
Setting it up on the floor so he can see what you're talking about is a good idea.

If we're being pedantic Mac, it's "You're welcome", not "Your welcome."

OK so if he opts to go with the smaller image would the PQ from Craigs calibration be lost ? How much smaller would the image be do you think ? Moving the throw 20 - 25 inches closer ?
Thanks steve I agree with you,the benefits far outweigh the extra work.

The calibration was lost as soon as you pulled it off the ceiling. THe color calibration will be close, but as soon as you move the projector, most if not all of the focus and convergence adjustments need to be redone.
