I picked up my friends JBL GTO1201.1 1100W RMS monoblock amp from him recently, since I figured it would be a good match for 4 12" JL Audio W6 woofers.

My main concern is can the alternator or battery in my car handle it. Its a 1977 Eldorado biarritz and has a new alternator (identical specs to original one, or as close as you can get for new), and I have a large battery, I think its 1100 cold cranking amps.

I don't want to stress the alternator or battery out so I wanted to know what I should do to make it easier on the car electronic system itself.

Any Advice welcome Smile

The cars battery is the critical factor. An alternator can barely supply enough current to run the factory accessories and that's above idle at that. So big battery or dual batteries would be the key.

My thoughts exactly Mac, I was thinking a 2nd battery would be better. I don't suppose upgrading the alternator a bit itself would be beneficial? I can get a bigger one for it.

Also I don't know if its necessary, but what about a capacitor or 2?

I didn't answer these questions because they can be subjective..... Laughing

Well as far as the alternator it would 1st depend on what the amp rating of your current alt is and what amp options are available as a replacement.

As far as the caps it would depend if your listening to a lot of consistent, heavy, window rattling bass and also the caps that are currently in the amp.

See, very subjective. Laughing

Lol, subjective indeed.

I know the alternator in my car is about 70 amps I beleive (Im not sure, Its been a while) I think I saw a nice chromed out 150 amp alternator on ebay for my car, it was definitely larger than what I have and it went for my car.

Honestly the music will vary, but for the most part im a Techno person when it comes to music. Though I listen to pretty much all genres except for country

The amp requires a 100 amp main fuse in the + line going from battery to amp, my friend who previously owned it figured he needed more power as well, since while driving at night on the highway or anywhere, you could watch the headlights go with the music very very easily on the road Laughing

We used 4 guage wire for both the positive and ground connections, and 10 guage going from the amp to subwoofer

I had a 300 amp alt custom made in KY for about 320.00 but that was about 8 or 9 years ago. BUT I started with an ambulace alt that was already 150 amps .

Hmm, interesting, I don't think I need a 320 amp one but a larger 150 (I think the one for mine was 170 or 200) would probably be sufficient

Thanks for your input Jeff Very Happy

This is the alternator I have picked out for my car, its a 140 amp one, the price is a bit more than I like but its chromed out so why not? Mr. Green

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-POWERMASTER-ALTERNATOR-POLISHED-12SI-140AMP-BUICK-CADILLAC-OLDS-REGAL-CALAIS-/270828954623?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1977%7CModel%3AEldorado&hash=item3f0ea9e3ff&vxp=mtr

Now with a 1100W RMS monoblock and 4 12s, would one capacitor be enough or do I need 2? I'm already set on getting a 2nd battery and the alternator (since it looks cool too Very Happy)

lm F ao Curt Razz well apparently its polished stainless or aluminum, not chrome, so better IMO and still has the bling Razz

And though I know your joking, you can hardly classify a 1977 eldoradio biarritz as a 84 hyundai Razz

Funny, my hydraulic jack broke this past weekend after 10 years of good service, so I went out to get another one. The best price I could find on sale was for a jack and stand combo for $69... and the damn things are all chromed. Will I feel stupid working on my cars this weekend until I get some grease on it!

It has a 425 Cast Iron Carbeurated V8 and she has an original 69,000 miles on it, I've put about 4000 miles on it in 3 years. (I don't go anywhere as I have nowhere to go Razz )

It is HEAVY METAL xD Mr. Green
