That French software & probe look really sweet. I could do the soldering &etc, but I don't want to try to source all those parts and make the PCB. Lyckman, any idea if they've assembled kits with board, parts, etc?

All you need to get these days is a Spyder2Express...I got one for $80 CDN!!

Then I can use it with the HCFR software (free), or even better the S2fly software which is also free on avs. S2fly is simple, get your VE to the grey scale patterns, attach or aim the probe and click a button...in a few seconds you will see your xyY value and you can adjust from there.

For a crt'er, that's all you need! And all of you should have it...color temp is definitely that important!

As for crt fp not being supported...it's not true. They probably don't want people to realize that they can get a probe for $80. I believe it's the exact same probe used with Colorfacts!

Ben, I was not aware of the HCFR or S2fly softwares. Must be a reason why no one else mentioned them.

I know there is an ongoing group buy for parts in their forum. I think the PCB is included. Unfortunately I don't speak french so I really cant tell. The sensor is good though. What I heard it is on par with Gretag Mac beth Eye one Pro.

A guy at the "A"-Site just found their software some months ago. It was in french only and no support for other sensors than their own DIY one. Allthough it supported manual import of measurements and could be used in conjunction with S2FLy (to take readings). I guided the HCFR guys with the spyder2 support (I'm the author of S2FLy Embarassed ), and now they have added support for other sensors also, and further sensor support will come. They also managed to translate the app in to english. I've heard english help files is on the way or if it is released allready. The HCFR software is really awsome! Smile Try it! You wont regret it!

If you don't want to build your own sensor, I'll suggest the Monaco OpticsXR (xRite DTP-94) sensor. It is much better than the Spyder2, especially at low luminance. Cost a little more, but it is well worth it. The XR is also MUCH faster than the Spyder2.

The OpticsXR is about 3x the price of the Spyder2 Express. I believe it's better, but I wouldn't call a 3x difference "a little more" ... Smile

The XR can be found for ~110$+ off eBay..

Hm, OK. And the XR is the DTP-94 that is supported with v1.1 of the HCFR software, eh? Hmmm...

But the HCFR probe also has an IR emitter to control the test DVD, right? How would another probe like the XR work?

Yes, The Monaco Optix XR and the XRite DTP-94 is the same probe. (Important that it is the XR version)

The IR-Emitter is just a convenient feature. Can be turned off for "DVD Manual" mode instead. You then get a message before each reading telling you what pattern to use. Like colorfacts.

I just tried to order one off ebay from Normans and it said it won't sell to me because I'm in an international country, well I guess Canada is international but that's odd. I sent them a message through ebay to ask why, I was going to use my paypal account so I don't see why there would be a problem with the money.

I guess I'll wait and see what they say.

Actually I think I'll look at the Display2 or the Display LT. They are suppose to have a far better low end response than the DTP-94 and depending on were you buy it it can be about the same price or at least for the LT version which they say is the same as the Display2. And the HCFR software is setup for those as well.

Not yet, but support for them will most likely be released. I know that the eye-one pro will be supported in the near future but I doubt it is the same api. (the pro is a spectroradiometer, the display2 is not)

Well I'm sure I read that it does support it and that was said by one of the authors. Maybe I misread it or was thinking of another thread over at AVS.

Seems you are right! From 1.2 (just released) it supports eye-one. That's great news. Smile

oh-

you have to explain to 99% of these people what a CRT projector is first.

Looks like Bob is a dork.

Hi Lyckman,

Great thanks for looking into that because I went back to find where I had read that but didn't find it. I had been reading so many posts and threads on the subject that I figured I probably misread something or got it confused with something else.

Seems the DTP-94 is going obsolete so I don't think that would be the one to buy, youcan find the Display LT for about $110USD at various places. Unfortunately some of those cheaper places don't ship out of the USA.
