Mac,

I wasn't sure if I was supposed to remove the D102FR that was bad, so I didnt, I did disconnect Q101FR-Q103FR and Q184, and it still goes into protection, but it did seem to take a couple seconds longer.

Now I know this might be a stupid question... but does the preamp board have to be in the receiver so it doesn't kick into protection? lol

Also since Q184 is bad check R184(4.7ohm) and R189(100 ohm)

Yes you need the pre amp board installed, And yes, remove D102FR. You may also have to remove D101FR for testing the receiver but try it first.

R184 and R189 are fine, I removed D102FR, removed the bad Q504FR replaced the resistor that blew on the preamp, checked the other resistors in the other channels on the preamp, but the receiver still goes into protection, would D101FR have anything to do with that?

Plug CP103 back in and recheck all your TP's for any voltage, including the 2 on the surround back board(which is a separate board).

Mac, I checked all the Test points again, TP102 was the only one that had voltage on it, 114.6vdc all others, including the 2 surround back ones (which were actually rather easy to locate for once) all have 0.00vdc on them

I believe this is why I said you may have to remove D101FR also. remove it and test for voltage again.

Ahhh, gotcha, Ill report back in 30, its about 10-15 minutes for dissasembly then reassembly lol

I understand that the way its assembled works great for denon in the factory.... not so in the repair world :-p

Hmm, you still have 115v on TP102. And you have Q101FR, Q102FR, Q103FR, Q104FR, D101FR and D102FR removed, correct?

All of that is removed except for Q104FR, I checked it quick and it appears to read OK, I will remove it and try again.

I have 3.8vdc when powered on, and it was at 1.4vdc when it was off.

Well now we know where that 115v was coming from. Did you test Q104FR for short between legs after you pulled it out?

We also need to find out if that 3.8v is shutting it down. Is there any way to disconnect CP502, pins 8 and 9 only?

EDIT: Q104FR (I had put 504FR my bad) reads open when out of the unit. no shorts, just open, no matter which way pins are tested. As far as CP502, it is mounted onto the board of the preamp, which plugs into the main board kind of like a card in a computer, so not really able to remove those 2 pins.

I could bend them though...

I assume pins 8 and 9 are the last 2 +2 pins besides the one other?

1 FR
2 FR
3 GND
4 NF2
5 NF2
6 +15V
7 +B
8 +B
9 +B

10 -B
11 -B
12 -B

Correct?
