I am installing an art video projection in a gallery in Switzerland using a Marquee 8500 with new tubes and an Extron 304 scaler. I have a problem and not very much time or any technical support. The gallery purchased the CRT on ebay and installed it. I have worked with Marquees in the past as well as Sony's and Barco's. I'm hoping that you may be able to help me if you recognise the problem...

I performed the initial guided mechanical set up and source set up. The convergence looked fine but when I exited the mode the source looked as though it was not converged - thick (and bright) red and green bands around objects in the image. When I then selected a test pattern - convergence was perfect.
Am I missing something? I feel as though it must be something quite simple????

Any help or a word of advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd really like to see some pictures of this. Are you using the main RGB input, or the secondary one, in slot 2? If slot 2, then you may have what's called a 'feedthrough' RGB board, with 2 sets of jacks on it. If so, then the RGB inputs aren't terminated with 75 ohm resistors.

If you're using the main input, then I suspect your source has issues. Either the Extron is bad, or you have a bad ground in one of the cables. If you can, connect a laptop to the Marquee via a different VGA to 5 BNC cable. That will confirm whether you have problems with the Extron or cable. I don't think this is a projector issue.

Hi Curt
Thanks for your reply. I am using the main RGB input (the projector only has one). The cables are a bit of a mess. I've been given a bunch of old BNC's and have been asking for a new set for two days now.
I swapped out the Extron for a lower model (line doubler) and the issue was the same so unless they are both faulty then I don't think that's the problem.
I am hoping to get new cables today and will start the set up again.
BTW I think we will be working together at the AIC in October.

Was the projector re-initialized to reset all previous settings?

I'm in Bern. It's been a hectic day... New cables worked wonders but didn't fully resolve the issue. I did a new set up and the image looked amazing - really relieved and very happy having my lunch. when I got back after lunch the image was out of focus. I brought up a menu and the text was fat and fuzzy. Performed an electronic focus - then had to converge again - great image again. Anyway the projector is not holding the settings and something is not stable. The image has flickered a few times and at one point the projector powered down when I pressed the utilities button. It keeps changing focus and also size. I've also been working on another installation today so time has been very limited. Have had to leave the situation to go back home to a wedding... someone else is taking over (ish) from me tomorrow.

To make sure the setting stay saved you have to unlock the memory location so any changes remain. Then you lock it again so any unwanted changes stay to that memory.

Thanks for all of your replies.
The issue was unresolved when I had to leave to come home to attend a wedding. A CRT 'expert' has been called in and has said that the problems are not easily detectable or solvable - so I still don't know. I think we'll be replacing the machine for this show but will hopefully get the Marquee fixed as the image was sweet before it started to drift.

HK Steve is your man! I don't know what 'pro' you are using, but by his answer, it doesn't sound like he's too technically inclined. Marquees are very easy to work on.

BTW, compared to North America, EVERYTHING is very close to each other in Switzerland! Smile

The reason you still don't know what to do, has a lot to do with that so called "expert" you consulted not really knowing what to do, or for the most part not understanding the projector at all.

Did you ask him if he was an expert with the Marquee, or had any real experienced with it?

I didn't get to speak to the 'expert'. It was all done through the gallery and I think their idea of an expert is probably quite different from mine.

I will tell the gallery about HK Steve and see if they are interested in getting the projector properly looked at.
Thanks again.

Europe was always a Barco market, MArquee's over there were never common commercially and I bet the majority were brought over by home theater guys for personal use. The fact that a gallery is using one is a surprise. Hopefully they understand that the machine is easily repairable and don't just chuck it out Wink

You may want to clean the edge connectors on both power supplies.

I can definately help, even if just to come and look.
Have spare parts also which can be used to correct problem, if needed.

If they are not happy with the Marquee, I have a Sony D50 which could be used.

Please let me know if I can help.

Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve
Yes, definitely. I sent a private message asking for your contact details (email address and phone no.) but I'm not sure if it posted. Anyway, the museum (not gallery) would definitely like to contact you so could you send me those details?
BTW - the artist will also need a CRT for an installation in Barcelona in July and Madrid in November.
Thanks very much

Andres, another forum member, lives in Barcelona and is a Marquee user as well. He might be able to help there. Let me find his contact info
for you if you need a Marquee install there as well.
