Just for fun, I took apart a lens. Thought folks might like to see what is inside. I learned a little. I'll add some info later once I've studied the bits...

It's fun to take apart lenses. I used to have a big bin full of them. My nephew really likes to play with them. I keep a few out on display in our house on one of the coffee tables and almost everyone who comes over picks them up and has a look.

Back when rear projection CRT was still a big market I would offer a service where I would disassemble lens stacks and paint the edges with flat black to possibly cut down reflections. Those lenses where no where near the good quality of front projection lens stacks so they maybe benefited from a little help. You could really see the improvement on Mits rear projections in images with mostly black backgrounds and then a bright object. Something like a BD loading image for example would have much less light scattered on the screen.

The optics quality and technology is really amazing... especially since we throw this stuff in the trash nowadays.
