I went from a pretty nice 1271 to a minty G70 (148 hours), so I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. I still think the picture quality is stunning. Sure, I see every little defect, and I hate the size and noise, but the picture quality is still just gorgeous.

So did your old G70 have 40k hours on the original tubes? If so it must have been pretty dim compared to the new one!

Yep, original tubes! Actually had it 10yrs, had 3500hrs when I got it and it slowly aged over the years. Funny thing, don't know if this is normal, but the chassis timer would roll back to zero somewhere between 14k and 15k hrs. it rolled back at least three times (roughly 42-45khrs) and showed an additional 6k when I shut it down. Perhaps the reason I got such a long life from the tubes is that I ran the contrast at 45-55 most of it's life. I could do that because I have one of the old Advent 7" curved screens that has a gain of 13, Yes I said 13!!! Didn't have to raise the contrast up into the 70-80 range till the last few years. The picture was still quite watchable, just not stunningly crisp and sharp.

Did you ever measure the Advent screen? I think Chuchuf measured a Vutec UHG screen at 5 or something like that. Anyway, I bet that was one bright image. I have been wanting one of those curved screens Advent, Sony or Vutec. How about I trade you a Barco 909 for your screen?

My dad had an Advent 72" curved silver screen. Watching movies on that screen in the late-70's and early 80's is what hooked me on home theater in the first place. Source was one of the first Pioneer Laserdisc players. Ahhh, fond memories.
Anyway, I don't know about 13 gain, but I could see how it could easily be 5 gain. That thing was über-bright and highly directional. The gain curve reminded me of an RPTV... Move very far off-axis, and the brightness really went down the tubes.
Side note: The Advent curved screen and matching Advent front-projector are still in use in a basement rec-room in family friends' summer vacation cabin.

Back in 1999, I was selling very high end home theater in the Atlanta Ga area ($20k-200k & more). We specialized in G70s and G90s. Ah the margins and commishions! At that time I had a 1271 with a 72" Advent curved screen at home. We took a projector in trade and an 84" Advent screen came with it. I claimed it of course and took it home. Same screen I still use today. Yes it is very bright and is really not that directional. Off axis of course it loses a little, but it is not objectional. In some literature in our tech library we had a screen comparison guide and that guide stated the Advent 84" had a gain of 13. The highest rated gain of any of them. Through the years the screen has gotten a nick here and there and I went on a crusade to find another one a few years ago. Alas no luck! Sure would love to find one. There have got to be a few lurking in a basement or garage somewhere! LOL
