| Curt Palme wrote: | My $.02. I can agree with pretty much everything that's been said. Craig really knows his stuff, and yes, I'd say side by side you'd see slight differences between the sets. The 909 is like a hot rod. Runs like a champ, but you will need to be under the hood from time to time. I've worked out a bunch of the problem parts issues, and do a crapload of upgrades before selling one at this point, even though it's about the latest chassis vintage. According to a fellow tech that isn't on here often, anything under a 2.0 software version on the 909 is considered a problematic machine.
It's &^%$&$ razor sharp. From the one unit that I did a careful setup on, it's on par with the G90 at least, if not more so.
Put it this way though, the 909 is twice the price of any of the other 9" sets. It won't give you twice the performance.
As an indicator, I've been selling low hour, low wear G90s for $3000, $3500 with a new green tube. I've sold 7 since Jan, and have two in stock. I have more 1209s and 9500s in stock as well for similar pricing. Of course, they are cheaper as is with no warranty, but usually by the time you're done futzing with the sets, you'll be into them for as much as I sell them for. I haven't seen any age related failures specifically, but a surplus 10,000 hour set that's 15 years old that' s transported across the country with minimal packing is bound to have a bunch of issues with it before it's ready for use.
You won't regret any of them though. All of them will run circles around the Sony 12XX. |
I am not going to say anything about Barco... at all... except that the 909 can throw a very nice image

No way! G90 has not been supported by the manufacturer for more than 10 years and they are still running. I have gotten many new G90 original owners in the past three years that have never had a tech come in ever.
I think there were only about 750 units made though. I have never seen a serial number higher than 750.

I have never heard of a G90 in commercial use outside of a movie studio, so a tenth of the production may result in a tenth of the stoppages. Marquees have no Unobtainium parts; one cannot say that for G90s or Barco 909s.

If Cliff could find a way for his G90's to slow burn his weed and pipe it down into his lungs he'd do it.
Combining his two true loves in Life, the stack and weed!

They all have strengths and weaknesses. None is more superior than the other, though one or two may have a few extra things to admire, but if they were all equally weighted, none would be better than the other.

From reading through a bunch of threads on this very topic I surmise the following:
In stock form, from a strictly performance stand point the following characteristics have been proclaimed.
9500LC:
-cleaner/purer video chain
-nice depth of image
G90:
-brighter
-sharper
-better absolute black
In theory an optimal solution would be a combination of attributes from both projectors, hence the reason many mod Marquees with Frankenyokes and lens (HD10F/HFQ900) is to yield a sharper/brighter image to go with the higher bandwith/cleaner video chain.

Much 'simpler' and cheaper to address the video chain issues inherent in the G90 design. AKA MP's BA board mods. I believe Craig and Mike have also given dues to the designers of the gamma chip on the G90.

Do these mods actually exist? To my knowledge they are not being produced or sold to the general public.

To the original poster:
Who's setting up the machine for you? If not set up correctly, your whole question of which is better is a moot point.
I've seen 7" and 8" middle of the road machines that were properly set up look considerably better than high end 9" machines where the person who set it up had no idea what they were doing.
If I were you I'd go for which ever machine the person setting it up is best at and most experienced at. That's more important.
Kal
