If you have put a good card on the red tube and still have problems try connecting the red video cable to the green RGB bd output. Check the red coax cable. It will work with both ends connected wrong but it doesn't work well with the signal going through the braid and the ground connected to the tiny signal wire.

True, although I changed the quad to a doubler it was the same cable. I'll test that.

So close to getting this PJ back to 80%! lol
BTW I was syncronized to the Quadrupler (62.5 Khz) then I tried the doubler (31.25 Khz) same effect. |
Sounds like some registration board problems. They are fairly easy to fix. Which one do you have? Look for little white stickers with 8XXXX or 88XXXX numbers on them.
Scott |
I'll have a look although the numbers may already be in this ( long ) thread.

Thought you asked me that one before

There were a couple different ones. We gotta know what we're dealing with!
Do you have a way of checking some stuff once we figure out what we have?

I meant the coax cable going from the RGB board to the CRT card. Make sure it isn't on wrong. It will plug in either way and kinda work but if wrong causes streaks and oscillations and other crap.

Pulled from an old email to Curt from Dec 6,2006:
Inside the case (under the black cover on the registration board) it says:
Green Cov & Bright Mod
65315 Rev A
The bottom board on the Registration tray where all the plugs, plug into says:
65248 Rev A
EDIT: Just noticed you wanted the 8xxxx numbers. I'm not at home right now I'll post them tomorow.

ohhhhhhhhhh that one. It's a tiny littlt thing. I think it's on there right because it origionaly had some green glue on the top of the connector and I keep pluging it in the same way. BUT I'll check when I play with it tomorow after work.

All I have is a DMM, I have a video test pattern generator on the way, and of course my HTPC. No 'silly scope though.
What kind of testing do you mean?

Well, a scope is always preferrable but a meter might work. We'll try.

Hello again. Tonight class we have the dreaded HIGH BEAMCURENT error. I've been thinking the red tube is flakey all along as I've had ton's of neck card's on there and it's always acted up. Well here's what happened tonight.
I made it through a whole film ( Chronicles of Riddic ) and shut the projector down right afterwards. Then I came here and poked around and decided to watch Star Wars for the umpteenth time. Just at the beginning where they cut to the inside of the ship I shut off the projecotor ( had to hit the head ) I came back 15 minutes later and it's a no start.
HIGH BEAMCURENT.
I'll pull the neck card off the red tube when I wake up tomorow. I'm to tired to do it tonight.
Speculation time... has the red tube finaly bitten the dust? Did Janet cheat on her husband with the pool boy? Was it Col. Mustard in the dinning room with the candle stick? Stay tuned sport's fan's, there's more spiderman comming up.

Oh and by the way Scott. I haven't forgotten about this.
I'm still trying to find a 'scope locally. I found one but the seller never responded to my email It was an HP 100MHz dual trace IIRC.

Red, no, Green, no, Blue, no. HVPS (again ) I hope not.
I just disconected the red neck card, Green neck card and the blue neck card completly and the projector goes through the regular startup screen on the remote. Fire's up, says CHANNEL 9 and NO INPUT, that part looks fine, then a second later I get the HIGH BEAMCURENT message and it shut's back down.
HVPS? I don't have a spare to test with so it's all speculation.
Thought's?

The Sony tubes are quite famous (infamous) for heater to cathode shorts. When they short it just about grounds the cathode which causes MAX CONDUCTION!!! If that is the problem it can sometimes be fixed with a CRT rejuvenator.

I did the usual testing, diconected the neck card's one by one still got the HIGH BEAMCURENT message. Then I tried disconecting the HVPS and unlike all the other times the PJ didn't power up. I got a new message OPEN INTERLOCK??
That's a new one to me.
Also I 'think' the IIC error light ( light #4 on the CPU card )may have been on just after boot up when the initial HIGH BEAMCURENT message came up. Not 100% on that on though. I just saw it for a second. I no longer get that light.
Is there a document of all the Ampro Error messages and their meanings BTW?

The open interlock message is there because you have the HVPS disconnected which would be a normal error message. I think you can turn off the interlock test on the 4200. I know you can on newer models. Its a switch on the cpu. Switch 4 on newer cpu.
The error codes and meanings are listed on page 2-9 in the 2000 service manual.

Thanks Mac, I'll have a look.
I've run the PJ before with the HVPS disconnected while testing, just to see if the chassis would power up. Maybe the dip switch was flipped sometime. I had the CPU board repaired once courtesy of Curt.

If you have removed the CRT cards the tubes shouldn't be drawing too much current from the supply. Just for fun you could try unplugging the Hobson connectors but that is probably a waste of time.
Disconnect AC power. Plug the connector with the small wires back into the mother bd. Leave the connector with the heavier wires unplugged. There is a 4 position dip switch on the CPU card. Place #3 switch to its other position. This will disable the open interlock message. Connect AC power and turn on projector. Does high beam current message show? The HV will not come up with the bigger connector disconnected. Maybe there is a problem with the diagnostic circuit. Try "30" code. See what it says.
If none of this shows any problems then the HVPS is probably toast. There would be a problem in the potted section if the high current is happening without tubes connected.

Ok tried that.
HIGH BEAMCURENT
Damn! That HVPS was in such nice shape too. I had 1080i dialed in and had a great picture.
Is there any company's that repair the HVPS?
