AR,
You seem to be the poster child for some one that has a lemon. I have never heard of anyone else with as many continuing problems with a PJ No matter WHAT kind of PJ!!! I think you need to buy another 4000 and use yours for parts. Or you could buy a 4200 and almost every part in your 4000 would interchange.

I've been offered a 4200 and two 4000's. I don't want another Ampro.
This is a strange projector for sure. I see all you guys solve your problems and mine just continue. Strange. I think I'm jealous.

I know you've had your share of problems with that 4000 and I wouldn't blame you for pushing it off a cliff. However, If you were to get a X600 series, you will not have any more problem than anyone elses projector. That 4000 on it's best day won't hold a candle to a 3600. Most 8" EM CRT's can be had for real short money.

For half a second I considered the 4200 series. It's 9 inch EM and LC'd. But then I still hadden't gotten this 4000 working. I can understand why the tubes in this are so snowy fresh.
So Paul, what parts interchange with the 4200?

Nearly all of the boards will work. The big difference is in tubes,CPU and the HVPS. Plus the extra board for focus. Most of the 4000s have the splitter built into the HVPS. All three HV wires come out of it. Some of the later ones had one wire come out and go to a splitter. The 4200 has one wire coming out going to a splitter that has the tube wires connected to it. If yours has the one wire then that would interchange as well. I believe that you could modify your neck boards to work in the 4200. The remote should be the same. Except I do have one here that uses the newer remote. But that is almost unheard of.
The 4200 is an EM focus PJ. You would be much happier with a 4200 than you are with the 4000. I have had about 11 Ampro PJs and have only had a few problems with a couple of them. The rest have been trouble free and very stable. I just checked my hours on the 4600, In a year and a half I have put on 2200 hours on it. It had 3100 on it in may of 06 and it has 5300 on it now. And that is pushing it kind of hard to light up my 10 ft wide screen.

Are you sure? I'm in the (very slow) process of packing my 4200 to go back to Curt for repair because I am too inept to figure it out....but you are several thousand km closer and for you I might even take my life into my hands and drive to Toronto with it.....

Ok the sumbich is runnin' fer now. I have the regular NTSC runnin' a threw a line dubbblar. I'm watchin' that J Leeno fella from Lost Angelies.
Let see how it is in an hour. Sometimes I can run it for a while initialy. Then if I shut it off and try a restart after a forum break I get the HV restart. Let's see if that happens tonight.

Ok I had it running for an hour then shut it down. Powered it back up half an hour later no HV shutdown. So far so good.
However the 'tic' in the picture comes back as the set warms up. I have to run it with the case off and have a fan on to keep it stable.
The 'tic occures half way up the screen when viewing either source (HTPC, or line doubler )

New fun, I farted around with the HV power supply last night. I got it back in, powered the projector up and got....no RGB or Quad decoder inputs recognized. WTF? Then I noticed this on the CPU board:
What kinda wierd and wonderfull stuff will this cause?

Bought the IC extractor tool. ($2.50) and a bunch of other stuff I probably didn't need ( electronics stores what can you do? )
I put the IC back in and it has been running stable for 8 hours or so. Cool.
I also tested some paper for a screen tonight. My determination: Wilson art wins. Now if I could just find two sheets of 5 x 12' locally I'd be happy.

Found the Wilsonart locally at Rona.
Now on to the next problem. When I level the projector off for 0deg projection angle I start to get a tic in the picture. I'm thinking it's the LVPS as the HV was replaced again recently.
I need more airflow into the LVPS.
However I do have other problems.
I have a geometry error that none of the adjustments seem to want to fix. See my high quality drawing below for details.

First check that the projector is not off to the right of center. You shouldn't have much of the distortion that you are showing. (That's if Master Top and Bottom Key are at 50% and projector is perpendicular to the screen). To access the controls press KEY button, then DYN. Press the button that selects top edge functions for Master Top Key and the bottom edge button for Master Bot Key.

I think I figured something out. The MASTER top key, bottom, left and right key don't do anything. From 0 to 100 I see no change.
Also don't have MASTER right and left pin. Strangely Master TOP and BOTTOM PIN seem to be working.
So close to getting this PJ back to 80%! lol
BTW I was syncronized to the Quadrupler (62.5 Khz) then I tried the doubler (31.25 Khz) same effect.

Also having RED tube issue's. I'm getting a smearing/solarization/streaking effect. Thought it might be the new Quadrupler but it did it with the old doubler too. THis tube has had 3 or 4 different neck card's. What could be causing this?

Sounds like some registration board problems. They are fairly easy to fix. Which one do you have? Look for little white stickers with 8XXXX or 88XXXX numbers on them.
