I won't run less than 4 ohms. The other option is something like a Phase Linear amp and some preamp, but I LOVE the look of the Pioneer SX series from the 70s. I shouldn't have given up the SX1280 I got for free last year from the recycler, but I got $650 for it, and I know I'll find another...

If you decide to go with an SX series receiver, you may want to consider the SX-1980 if your into Analog AM/FM at all. The FM tuner is quartz locked. When you touch the tuning knob, the receiver senses it and adjusts itself so there is no additional interference from you being in contact with the receiver while tuning it, you can hear the receiver make a light click when you touch it, and even see the difference in the signal meter, a very very cool feature that I have not seen on any other receiver. Very Happy

Oh yeah, love the 1980. Don't think I'd be listening to much FM on it though, but yep, a very nice unit.

Yeah, no kidding! Funny that people don't realize that they'd make WAY more on selling stuff individually. Like the seller of this CL ad. He probably has only been told by the original owner that 'some of the stuff is worth big $$), but does he REALLY know what a reasonable (or lowball) offer is?

It does go to show that there's an insane amount of vintage stuff out there in collections like this that are out there.

I actually thought of my sh*tpile of crap in this place. If I died tomorrow, you guys would have a field day, and those of you without passports would flood the Vancouver area as illegal aliens..Smile

Why do you assume they don't realize they'd make more selling individual pieces? I'd assume they probably know that, but couldn't do it even if they wanted to! How is an average Joe - probably with a full-time job, kids, hobbies, and all the other sh*t most of us have going on in our lives - supposed to spend countless hour selling a hundred or more pieces of audio gear?

IMHO, a typical average Joe has the following options:
A) Hire an auctioneer to sell it all off at once and pay a 20-30% gross commission and hope the auctioneer is good, the auction is well-marketed and well-attended.
B) Make a serious part-time job for months trying to photograph, list, and sell off the collection one-by-one.
C) Advertise the lot, take offers, and sell only for the right price.

I think all approaches are legitimate... It's a question of time for most people. It's true you might be able to make a lot more selling individual pieces, but you'd spend a lot more time doing it.

Let's say the guy will only be able to sell the lot for $15,000, but could get $30,000 selling individually. If he spends 20 hours selling the lot, he makes $750/hour invested. If he spends even 40 hours selling individually (and I think that's WAY low), he gets the same $750/hour invested. That doesn't even take into account the opportunity cost of what else the guy could have been doing with his time.

It's just like your refurb computers... You figured out you made more money (per time invested) selling the computers with pulled hard drives than trying to reformat and reinstall. I think this would be very much like that.

Now, some enterprising individual could probably hire a high school kid for a month or two to photograph and write descriptions and ebay the items, but there are going to be significant costs doing that, too.

I don't think there's a "best method" answer because it depends on the individual and their circumstances.

Hey Curt, remember when I was wanting to get a quad reel?

Check this out, dude is uploading all the quad you want and the quality is FANTASTIC on a lot of the recordings.

get ready to have a beefy internet connection though! http://the-quad-blog.blogspot.com/

There are some serious gems on that page for sure!

I've also been listening to my vinyl a lot lately as well. Seriously, when done right, vinyl sounds freaking awesome.

I'm actually tempted to contact this guy in LA, pick this stuff up and sell it LOL. Smile

Not like I dont have enough to do already!!!!!!!!!

Browsing that guy's site... Definitely going to be downloading some of that sh*t!

If it sounds good, I'll send him some PayPal love.

ecrabb- you're right of course, who has the time to list? However, using your computer example, if I listed groups of 10 defective laptops together as 1 lot, I wouldn't get near what I would for one.

In this economy, few people have the time or the money for a large investment like this, I'll bet he gets very few legit offers. He might get an offer from Asia, where a bunch of money is (I know, I always sell CRTs there), but the shipping would be killer.

But... a messload of people are on the lookout for specific vintage audio gear, and would pay top $ for that one piece they're looking for.

But you are right, if I were retired, truly retired, I would make an offer such as you say.. use my eBay reputation, fly down for a month and list all the stuff for him.. for a 25% commission.

Cliff, that's a killer link. IN order to hear that, I'll just have to come your place.. and fall asleep in the theater again..Smile

Sorry for the OT detour... Cliffy... Do I understand that guy's site correctly that either those files were captured from discrete quad, or decoded from LP or RTR encoded quad to quad discrete recordings, then put on DVD-A?

Got Simon and Garfunkel downloaded... I know what I'm doing after kids are bed tonight! Thumbs Up

So I didn't read the site... do you need a quad decoder connected to your sound card, or do you install a second sound card, and get 4 individual channels out?

Dude is that awesome or what? I'm telling you, some of these recordings, especially the 7 1/2IPS discrete quads are just incredible. The best part is on most, he puts the DTS, DDigital, and DVD-A all on the same disk.

If you want to play them back on your computer in multichannel glory download fubar2000 and get the DVD-A plugin for it. Sounds unreal on my pc with my X-FI.

I use Virtual Clone Drive (free) to mount the ISO's for playback on the PC as well. Otherwise, just burn the ISO and pop it in your DVD-A player Smile

any 5.1 sound card will work Curt Smile

Download Fubar 2000 and the DVD-A plugin along with Virtual clone drive and your in good shape. You can as well just burn the ISO and playback in any DVD-A player Smile

WTF? Why is there a password on a RAR?!?!!? I'm trying to download Santana's Greatest Hits, and two different UnRAR tools say the file is encrypted!

Why the hell do people insist on using RAR, anyway? I can see it for multi-part files I guess, but this is a 16KB file I assume is a torrent link. Why does that need to be RARed???!!

Ahhhhh, slow down there grasshopper lol. I was waiting for one of you to start screaming! Smile

Ok, for the password, look to where it is posted under the picture where it says PW (on the main page posting). Select the invisible text to the right of PW and you have your password to unlock the file.

Oh, and us geeks prefer rar lol. Been using it for years upon years.

Thank you, sensei! Thumbs Up

DL'ing Santana and Chicago, now. Looks like they're not quite as popular as Simon & Garfunkle, because they aren't downloading in 20 minutes. Wink

It's obvious RAR is a geek thing; I just don't understand the obsession with it. OS X has had native zip support for years, (and Windows, too right?) yet geeks still insist on using some utility that has to be installed on every single box you wanna download sh*t from other geeks on. Nope. Don't get it.

RAR is a "trying to keep things away from the sheeple" app lol. Smile

Glad you got it worked out. Be patient. The reward is so worth it. I just make sure I keep my box going 24/7 when I am downloading. Oh and if you have some bandwidth to spare, give some back as well.

Download the Doobie Brothers as wel as the doors, america, chicago, you name it! I could give you a whole list fo sho. SO MANY good clean unmolested tracks in this collection. Just insane! Smile
