TV/Projector: Marquee 9500 Ultra

Hi,

I'm testing some of the boards that I recently acquired. So for the testing environment we can rely on a perfectly working PJ where only the BUT (Board Under Test) is the uncertain variable.
I have two Control Boards which share an interesting "feature": When I apply power, the amber Standby LED lights up and everything is as usual. When I power on with the IR Remote (Cable Remote not connected) relays will click, fans will speed up but nothing else (no HV). Instead, the diagnostic lights on the CLM wil start blinking in sequence from left to right and back again. When I first saw this it strongly reminded me of "KITT"s red flashing lights. As this happens the PJ stops reacting to IR Commands and can only be switched back to Standby via the Reset Button. BTW: The daughter boards (DPB&SWB) are known working ones.
Does anybody know which type of problem the "Knight Rider" Mode indicates?
Is it a problem with the Main processor (68000) and its peripherials? At least it seems that the Sub Processor is working because it initially reacts to IR Commands and controls the flashing lights...

I say you re try a different DPB on it. Even tho you say they are known to be good different versions of U7 on a DPB will not work with certain CLM versions. Also it could be cold solder joints on the Socket of the CLM for the DPB. Reflow those to be sure.

I've had 2 CLM's so far where someone tried to pull and de-oxidize the socketed chips but instead wound up bending or even mangling the connecting pins on the chip. Most likely done with a screwdriver instead of a proper $10. PLCC chip puller. Both cases produced the RR lights

Hi,

Thank You for Your replies. I pulled all socketed chips with a proper PLCC puller and cleaned their pins with a glass fiber pen. Then I thoroughly cleaned the sockets and put them back in. The board had another issue: The previous owner had added additional capacitors at several places and had afterwards removed some of them. I believe he did this because the CLM must have stopped working after these mods (at one location he had soldered additional caps across a resistor instead of a filtering ceramic cap). So I reworked and cleaned all of these locations as some of them had larger solder blobs and residues around. I too replaced all of the tantalum caps as they showed signs of heavy soldering.
After that the Marquee fired up just fine and the first test ran for three hours without issues.
If it stays like this then everything is fine and I'm very happy that I now can use the extended Geometry adjustments of an Ultra (Ultra FGM, CVA, HDM and VDM were already there) as the CLM's software is Version 4.0E and the DBP's is 5.3...

LOL, The Marquee maintenance thread strikes again Laughing
I guess watching a you tube video doesn't automatically qualify a person to become a electronics bench tech.
Luckily this machine fell into good hands instead of a recycling center Surprised
