An idea.
What about buying the Studiotek 130 I presented in the first post and put a velvet surround on it?
I could then play with any size I want and when I'm happy, cut it up and do a DIY.
Been looking for days for an 87" or 92" with 1.3 gain pull down and can't find one.
I do keep bumping in to threads that brag about the Studiotek 130 .
I know draganm says "Perf'ing drops the light output of the screen"
but since the screen is rated at 1.3 gain I assume the 1.3 was measured with the holes in the material?
I've also seen some seller advertising 1.3 gain screens, but when you look at the specs is says "white matte" uhmmm....???

Afryia. Do you have geometry problems with your rasters maxed out?
|
Geometry along the edges for any PJ with rasters maxed will be more challenging.
What you get is slight pin, bow or a little of both (wave) along the perimeter. I'd say +80% of the image is geometrically spot on. The other 20% or so you can only tell with grid patterns and strings. You can't see it in video or film.
That being said with all three rasters maxed they all experience similar distortions so you are still able to get excellent convergence.
MAG focus is a little soft, optical focus may be a little soft around the edges. That is true to varying degrees for any raster size. You generally focus on screen center so it usually not a distraction in real world viewing.
Here is another trick. I setup using the 4:3 raster on a 16:9 screen so the top and bottom raster/pattern projects off the screen. These areas I don't worry about geometry unless it influences the geometry on the screen. So I only adjust for the best on screen geometry.
Then as a last resort tweak with Zone.

What do you guys think about this screen?
http://www.htdepot.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=FXO169A%2D100%2DBK
Is this really 1.3 gain.
How do I measure the 1.3 gain to make sure I'm getting what I pay for?
I called their tech department and they said it was indeed 1.3 gain even though the description says Matte White?
Any one have experience with HTDepot and Focupix?
Thanks

Never heard of the Focupix, but I highly doubt that's more than 1.1 gain. The list of screens that are sold as 1.3 gain, but which actually test closer to 1.1 or even 1.0 gain is very long.
I'm amused their tech department says it's 1.3 gain even tough it's matte white. Matte white IS 1.0 gain. The only way to add gain is to make it more reflective. It could be near for 1.1 or 1.15 gain, which is where most 1.3-gain screens actually measure.
Unless you can find a third-party review that says otherwise, I'd assume it's closer to 1.0 than it is to 1.3.

Was there something wrong with the Elite screens that I recommended? They have an 87" wide pulldown for $169 MSRP.

Hi Spanky
Nothing wrong with it. I just could not find the 87" elite with a 1.3 gain.

But, that's because they're just being honest about the gain.
I don't think you're going to find a "budget" screen (unless you buy used) that's actually 1.3 gain. All the cheap stuff claims 1.3 gain when they're actually 1.1 because who's going to actually measure it?

Interesting, Mike... I've heard of tensioned screens, but I don't think I've seen them tenderized! Does it make the screen juicier? Can you buy regular screen material and DIY tenderize yourself?
