Tried both and unless you're OK working with PC's, they can quickly become a real headache. HTPC does offer some advantages if you like fooling around with settings, higher scan frequencies etc. For ease of use, remote convenience I prefer the dedicated BR (Oppo BDP-83) option direct to the pj via a Moome card. Back when I was fooling around with HTPC, the audio side of HT was not very good. May be better option now.

If you can find a inexpensive VP like a lumagen HDQ and use a HD fury after it or a Moome External HD , unless you have a NEC moome Card its a good alternative and you'll get some Color Management control like Gamma and RGB along with Greyscale at 11 points.

If you have the money then dedicated Lumagen and players is probably better and easier. If you don't then a HTPC can be a nice inexpensive solution. Before Dave (person99) chimes in on the cost being close to a grand, lets just say a HTPC can cost that much but are usually much less.

Dalite high power is the obvious choice here Mr. Green
See the "new HT thread" on screen discussion. Your best/cheapest is Wilsonart Designer White if you can fabricate a decent wood from for it. Otherwise, if your room doesn't have light spilling in the HP is a pretty good choice IMO.

IMO: HTPC for digital media such as FLAC MP3 WMA WMV MPEG MP4 MKV M2TS etc...

Blu Ray for blu rays, and HD DVD for HD DVDs, its just easier and better for my use. Got it all going into a DVDO VP30 then ouputting to the XG1100, works great, I really love not having to setup multiple signal entries in the projector, and switching between stuff with the VP is like using a normal TV.

For a screen, you need to figure out how much you want to DIY and your budget.
