Got in a 5 year old Samsung 1080p plasma TV last weekend with 3 other flat screens. Was told that one of the set smokes. I thought the guy said that it was a 32" set that I got in. It didn't smoke. I then forgot about that comment.
Today I plugged the Samsung in. It seemed to work fine, so I ran downstairs to get a programmable remote for it. I came back up, the set is still working fine.
However.. I smell something burning. I look on my bench to see what I'd put the soldering gun or iron on to cause the smell. I glance over at the still working Samsung. Smoke is POURING out the back. I knew right away what the problem was. It was an easy 15 minute fix.
Wanna guess what the problem was?

Nope, it was an actual component failure.

I don't know yet. But my friend who works a McDonald's was promoted from janitor to the french fry line and then to the cash register.
So that means he will be qualified to fix any electronics at Geek Squad City.
I'll give him a call.

It was indeed the main power supply caps. One went from 470uF to 200pF, and the other was at about 150uF. What got me is that one was so hot, you couldn't touch it, yet the set kept working. Robbed caps off another working power supply board, and it's running fine. No more smell!

Good ole capacitors, that set looks like it was made around the time everything electronic died from capacitors. Still a nice TV though
