Got the type of call that I don't like getting from anyone. A long time customer in California, has bought at least two CRTs and parts from me over the years, we chat once a year.
On Monday afternoon, his house burnt down, literally to the ground, nothing but ashes left. He got out fine, as did his family and pet(s), but he has literally nothing left. 4 CRTs, a Fury2 and 3, a new in the box Lumagen and 3 BR players all died as well, and he and I shed a tear for the lost tubes.
Luckily, he's dealing with a woman insurance adjuster who used to work at an electronics company, and she told him to write off everything... and he has replacement insurance.
Good news for him down the road, but I can't imagine losing your whole damn house before Christmas. Apparently their guess is that the fire started in the attic.
Oh, and BTW, here's luck for ya.. he lives in California, and 3 weeks ago due to budget cutbacks, they closed the local fire station. It took 80 minutes for the fire trucks to show up. Go figure.

That is terrible! I am glad to hear he made it out ok, as did the rest of his family and pets!
R.I.P. to his house and nice home theater gear Thats the type of stuff I hate to see, such a waste on good CRT and theater equipment
Maybe now he can buy some new G90s once his house is rebuilt!

I feel so sorry and bad for this person.
It sucked when my house burned down, and that was in Feb, not at Christmas .... Terrible thing to happen!

80mins for the services to arrive is pathetic. I wonder what the fallout might be from the insurance company. Many policies often state that fire services must be available within a certain radius from the property. I wonder what could have been saved had they arrived within 5 mins.
My condolences go out to the owners. In the end its the animate objects that really matter and it sounds like everyone escaped injury.

Maybe some stuff, but I dont think a lot would have been salvagable, Our neighbors house burned down a few years ago and honestly the fire damage wasn't that bad... it was the water damage from the fire department, almost everything in the house was ruined from water, not fire...
pretty damn sad that it took 80 minutes though, that isn't right...

This reminds me of the smoke detectors, which are still sitting on the kitchen shelf waiting to be installed in the basement theatre. I'm gonnea put one into the hush box too.

I just bought a fire/water proof safe box for that reason, to store the objects that money can't replace (like my grandfather's purple heart medal and pictures) and all the receipts for everything else. I can't imagine losing my home, but sounds like he has good insurance, and he has his family and pets, so its not all bad. You can make lemonade out of those lemons. Now he can build the house they've always wanted. Thoughts are with him over the holiday's though.

We call the fire department "The cellar savers"
Anything that's alive, get it out. The fire department will save the hole in the ground for you to rebuild. The best they can do is hopefully contain the fire but very little is useable after the fire is out and you're usually left with a building that is more of a liability than an asset.

No point being pessimistic; it probably would't work anyway.
