The easiest way to check it out to plug out the neck board. The neck board is connected to the closest board in the iron box (Gain CTL) at the end of the machine which has a lot of trimmer resistors on it (DON'T TOUCH THEM), so if you plug out the wide connector of the blue neck board then your machine will power up (at least we hope)
Topull the neck board you need to release it. There is a philips screw which holds the neck through a rubber(ish)ring this is what holds the board firmliy, again the room is very tight, you'll have to play to get out the board

So I finally managed to pull the wide plug of the blue tube from the Gain CTL board, and the machine powered up fine. As soon as I put the plug back and power on, the blue gets very bright and everything shuts down. I did manage to remove the blue neck board. And that's enough for tonight. I will try tomorrow to swap neck boards...unless someone has a better idea???

I pulled the blue neck-board and inspected it; there is a component that appears fried: D3908. I don't know what that is, I will try to post a picture. I pulled the red neck board and put the blue board in it's place: I powered on and the red became very bright and everything shut down, as with the blue. I conclude that the blue board is bad. I wanted to put the red board on the blue tube, but one of the wires was not long enough to hook up, so I don't know if there is anything else. It would be nice to know if it is just the blue board.

D3908 is a diode, thats what the "D" means. So i would assume something else caused the diode to fail. A new board is in your future.

I had exactly the same problem, it was the diode and the IC that went bad. It is very hard to find a new VPA-13, replace the whole board.
These tubes are very well built, they doesn't generate much problem. Buy a new board throw it in and everything will be fine, trust us Wink

Thank you once again for all your input. I just need now to find a neck board. I sent an email to Curt last week to see if he had any such parts in case I really needed it. I have not heard back yet, although given the Holidays, it's not so surprising. I'll post an add in the sale section also...

By the way, how do you post images? I see that I would need to post it on some public server, but I've never done that. What do you use?

Nah,

You just have to add it as an attachment to Your post. If it's too large it will be shown as a file, otherwise it's shown with a frame around it...

Forget that, just use Photobucket, then you can use it on other forums as well.

www.photobucket.com

That way everyone can see it no matter where you post... Nothing worse than seeing attachments are posted and you cant view them....

parts are cheap so no need to trouble-shoot a burnt board. However looks like a blown diode with a transistor near-by, somemthing went bad there, prolly the transistor
There's a 6PGX I can grab locally for parts but the 2 hour drive round trip is really holding me back. Confused If Curt has nothing then I will do it.

Draganm, how much would you sell your board for, and what would I expect for shipping? My postal code is J4B 6E7, but in a pinch, I could have it shipped to NY state, 12919 (it's a 2-hour round-trip, but I often save packages up to make it worth my while).

I don't want to put you out, but as you said, if Curt can't help me...I'm waiting to hear back from him.

If Curt does not sell you a new card, let me know. I think I have about 3.

Yeah mate i frequent a few gaming forums, and i have noticed a fair few times you can see the attachment is there, and it can only be seen by logging in. Sometimes i dont have an account, and cant see the pics. Other times, i just think why bother uploading pictures on here when photobucket is WAY better and free???

I installed another neck-board (thanks to Mr. Wallace), and everything powers up fine.

Thank you for all your input and support!
