Which one overall is better? They both have HDMI inputs, and the usual assortment of other inputs, but the VP30 has the RGBHV terminals and the Edge does not, although the edge does RGBHV from the component output (or so I read)
Which one...

Both of these units have been discontinued, however, the Edge is considerably more up-to-date with the latest HDMI 1.3 compatible inputs and 3D pass through with a firmware update along with the two HDMI outs in which you can split the audio and the video. There may be other features but these are the most obvious differences. The VP30 is a few years old.

The Edge also properly de-interlaces 1080i; the VP30 can only do a basic bob/weave de-interlace on 1080i signals.

I just had to put that face because you said they are discontinued. Given the fact that my NEC XG is also discontinued, they seem like quite the pair!
But in all seriousness, the Edge would be the one to pick over the VP30?
I'm looking for something cheap, and something mainly just so I can set custom timings and resolutions so the raster on my XG1100 will behave instead of banding uncontrollably.
Also what is the actual value of the Edge/VP30 ?? Most ebay sellers want $300+ for one of these, the only cheap ones I can find are the DVDO iScan HD and iScan HD+ which have DVI, and the HD does not pass HDCP content via DVI, like the HD+ does, and even those they want a couple hundred bucks for...

Well ok, its not quite the edge, and its not quite the VP30, but it will do what I want it to do, so I bought myself a DVDO iScan HD MM601 upscaler, it was only $50 shipped.
yeah it doesnt have HDCP or HDMI, but its better than no scaler
