well "honor" might be an exaggeration, at least AFA an old stock surplus 8500 is concerned.
After looking at this 9PGX with just an amateur set-up it actually looks really good. I would run it in my HT if need be. The P16 tubes and stock HD-145 lenses give it an edge over the typical high hour marquee or Barco with 180 tubes and HD8 lenses.
You really need a pristine low hour or modified marquee 8 inch with Moome card to beat it .Did I just say that  |

well it's not quite that final. One thing I noticed about the NEC is it tends to crush blacks more than Marquee (with no gamma boost on either one).
Also, a marquee with mods and the same lenses is sharper. I'm just grateful NEC didn't completely screw up the menus', remote, and memory like the sony g70.
almost got comfortable operating it yesterday

yeah the colors are a bit interesting on an NEC, but they , if calibrated properly have the absolute most realistic color I have ever seen out of a display, Sony tends to drive the red a bit more on their units than other brands of displays that I've used, and its not just on CRT either.
All in all, if you give a NEC a chance (like you are doing now  ) it will reward you aplenty

Screw the menus? These are the best menus ive seen in my life!!!
I do have some rather dark low end in my NEC as well, but that seems to depend on the source too, when gaming with RGB, there is no issue at all. DVDs and blu rays seem abit dark in the dark scenes...
Still, in my case the screen is 120 inch 4:3, so its not going to help that i dont blank the top and bottom for wide screen content...

Jeremy, i think they drive the red cause it gives the illusion of a brighter image, and when you look at TVs in the shops, most are drawn to the brightest looking one, not the most natural
