You say digitals are getting better, hmmmm, yes/no. All I read in the digital forums are problems and more problems. If I want a screen setup in my new(old) house then my only choice is to dump my present CRT and buy a digital.

Not something I'm too happy about because like I say reading the threads over at AVS in the 3K+ section makes me stress out for fear of the unreliable projectors available in the digital world. Investing in a digital projector is risky imo compared to a CRT, at least the CRT can be rebuilt time after time, not so much with a digital. Like Curt says they are a throw away item.

I think if anyone on this forum deserves the big thumbs up for anything it would have to be Nashou66. He does everything himself, does a lot of research and doesn't just shotgun in a bunch of parts and call it a mod.
I don't even do Marquees and he's my hero Thumbs Up

it's only worth what someone will pay for it...I can't even fathom having so much money tied up in a projector and then needing capital for something else.

Crt's are dead...yet 9inchers remain alive...but for how much longer would anyone even be interested in laying a large amount of their own capital to aquire these beasts? My bet is not much longer...and as curt says, the cheapskates on here are not likely to pay out for it. So that leaves...who, exactly?

That's an easy answer: All the CRTers that are busy enjoying their sets to spend time here. Smile

This year was actually far better than last year all around for CRTs, for me anyways. Way more 909s in the door than before, but also more other 9" sales. For the last 10 years, a used CRT has a far lower cost/hour of run time for those that still appreciate CRTs and the picture quality thereof. The market is still shrinking, but gawd forbid should I need to take a week off to install a sound system, the proverbial shite hits the fan if I don't answer emails in the timeframe that people have expected from me..

The picture is priceless but the equipment does not command a price commensurate to its performance. The uber rich clientele that drove the industry from its beginnings to its current stature are not hobbyist (like those visiting the forum) that care about IRE or 6500 Kelvin but those that simply have money and ask an installer to give me the "latest and greatest". They place their trust in the custom installer who's pushing digital. The irony is that those who have the budget for "the best picture quality" are not really receiving it. We all know that CRT is not dyeing because of obsolescence but because of marketing.

Ben, you've had this line ever since I can remember.. ditto for Dave in Rx I think.

Why bother being here then?

I drive a 4 cylinder Toyota, always have. I don't go sitting on a muscle car forum saying their gas guzzlers are a waste of time, so why input your comments here that are always negative? I just don't get it?

Overclkr was my motivation to move to CRT. His setup is absolutely awesome. Like having a trophy wife or a muscle car it is designed to be shown off and bragged about. My favorite part about the digital debate is the shear number of those pjs littering the landscape of flea bay.

I have a crt...it is impractical and obsolete. but..it is still a hobby, and it usually throws a very nice image. But, at this point..it really is a hobby, otherwise someone like Kal would still be in the game.

I'm making a point that I am free to make...they are impractical and obsolete. i doubt there is much to argue about there...any value tied up in a 9inch crt stack is value that is dwindling..fast! I guess I wanted to get that point through. If this guy needs money...then sell it now, because in a year it will be worth a lot less.

Could be tough on the ego to not be the big dog though....

Let's be clear about this, from the stand point of best picture quality it's not any more impractical than a high end DLP.

-Lowest MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of any current projection technology
-Mature technology
-Both require diligent calibration to reach top performance threshold (neither are "plug and play")

With regards to being obsolete you are incorrect; CRT still has better:

- Black level/Contrast Ratio
- Motion Resolution

The Digital Folks usually argue that the latest PJ's are finally capable of equalling or surpassing 9" CRT performance. Consumers have been fed that BS since the very first digitals began showing up at CEDIA/CES a decade+ ago. Just because corporate marketing tells you something doesn't mean it's true Wink

There eventually will be a digital technology that is able to achieve optimal picture quality but that day has yet to pass, for now it's simply a work in progress...

Given the consistently evolutionary (rather than revolutionary) nature of the progression of digital projection technology, exactly what development do you expect in the next year that will cause such a large decrease in the value of Cliff's setup? Short of a <$10K, 4K resolution, 5000 lumen, infinite on/off CR, laser-driven consumer projector - which is no more than a pipe dream - I'm not aware of any reason to expect such a large drop. There is no digital that is better than CRT in every metric - in fact there isn't even a digital at any price range that bests all other digitals in every metric. With either display technology you have to chose your compromises.

After over a decade of digital projection technology evolving while CRT has remained relatively static, CRT can still keep up with or exceed digital in many important areas, and that's a testament to CRT. And this is coming from a guy who has owned zero CRT projectors and over a dozen digital projectors.

Maybe you should try a 9 incher on for size and see how that makes you feel. Razz

Guys

For my personal viewing it is two M9500s overlapped in the center on a nine foot wide screen. One of the 9500s started out as an 8500LC, I dropped new tubes in about 11 years ago. I am running the Same Tubes still. A lamp system over eleven years would have consumed several replacement lamps and then died six years ago, as would lamp projector number two. Yeah, a nine inch CRT is big and clunky and you have to f------ align it here and there, but these things throw the best picture in town and most folks can repair their own, so why own anything else?????????

it's just another 100000 miles on the odometer...crt prices have been in a nice decline pattern, and there is nothing to stop any further decline.

I still like the image of my xglc, but the 200 dollar joe kane dlp I bought on ebay beat it in several areas. One of the key areas is color...ruler flat greyscale and dead on accurate primary colors right out of the box. In many scenes...it simply looked better. And it was 200 on ebay...200 doesn't even cover shipping of a crt. And this thing had 3800 hours on it...only 2 bulbs. THat's more hours than I would use in a long, long....long, long time.

It didn't make me take the xglc down...but why would I? Once you're in on crt...there's no huge reason to get out. Unless you need money...plus, it's a pain in the ass to take off the ceiling and try to sell it..etc.etc. If they were both in my basement and neither was already installed, the choice would be simple.

IMO good 9 inchers are holding their value very nicely so long as they don;t need a retube. I've seen very little drop relative to a few years ago. I think when it comes to the higher end pj's in nice condition, demand outweighs supply and a price plateau has been reached.
