Thats right, the only reason I know the guy is because our daughters play together. His daughter spent the night here and loved our theater....compared to theirs. She then told her dad about our projector. Then he came and asked me if I knew anything about repairing them, wich I know very little. Then I found out his is digital......I know nothing about them. I took a look anyway. It is an "Epic Sound", model "Epic 990". He said they were watching a movie and the bulb went out. They replaced the bulb, but no help. The fans run. I looked inside and saw nothing noticably burnt. I measured voltage across the bulb, but now that I think about it, it was his automotive DVOM. It probably turns on in DC mode and I did not change it to AC, but it said 115 volts. I was hoping someone might be able to tell them something better than what I told them. "It's disposable....just get a new one" I was joking around of course, but I told them I would check.
Anyone have any ideas???

Thanks
Dave

First let me say that you never test voltage at the lamp socket. Test instrument damage and personal injury can occur.

With a no light issue even after a lamp change can indicate many things. Some units have a lamp door switch and if the switch is bad or the door not properly installed can cause a no light. There is also a thermal switch on the lamp housing and if it went open from hgih heat it may not of closed and again would be no light. Or even a fuse in the power supply or ballast.

Those are the simple possibilities. Other wise could be a bad ballast, power supply or main board problem. Also a bad fan.

Wild shot would be a bad new lamp but unlikely.

Sort of looks like that, but some differences. Inputs are on the other side, lens is centered out the front, I don't know if it had a TV tuner in it or not, I know it had speakers, if you want to call them that. They looked like maybe 1 1/2" x 3" (don't know what that is mm mmm metric) lol. Still waiting to hear to back from them on the trap/bulb door, it was off when I got there, so maybe that's all it is.

Don't worry about the inches vs. metric. I'm bilingual.

Well they put the cover back on the bulb and still nothing. I didn't see any fuses when I had the cover off. I told them about the thermal switch, but I don't know if they will do anything with it. Is it worth having it repaired?...I've never even a cheap digital in action. I'm on my 2nd CRT and love it !!! and it was cheaper. I only paid $300.00 for my G-70.....well and $700.00 + for new blue tube...and $400.00+ for IFB 1080p card....and soon VIP 3D.......does it ever stop ?

Well, two of my daughters stayed at the new friends house last night, wait , what time is it,ok Friday night. Went to pick them up tonight and got roped into bringing it home. My daughters and I all went to our first hockey game tonight. Our town now has a professional hockey team, this is their first season, Bloomington Blaze WOOHOO, they lost 2-6, but we had a good time. So I didn't look at till like 12:00pm.....12:30 I had it working?????....OOOPS, I fixed it...that's what we say when we fix an intermitten problem on a truck and don't know what wire we touched that fixed the problem. OR...is there a timer involved?

LOL, had a mailman who used to see me in the garage all the time working on MArquee's ask me if I wanted "one of those really big TV's that weighs 400 pounds". I'm guessing it was a CRT RPTV. I guess if you know how to repair one thing you can repair anything Smile

So something like this I'm guessing:
http://youngstown.craigslist.org/ele/2599763436.html

or this:

http://loudspeakerusa.com/images/pdf/EPIC-990-PDF.pdf

I'd give it to him straight that he got ripped off. They are crap PJs that do not even have digital inputs. I can't find the native resolution of the PJ, so I'm guessing it is likely a 480p PJ. Here is one report from someone on a scam site:

Quote:
Product or Service Involved: Epic Sound 990 projector

******* pulled up to me in the kmart parking lot in a sh*tty white astro van. Then showed me a fake catalogue I payed $600 cash for what they told me was a 1080p projector listed for $3699. I will beat them if I ever see them again.

Given that any halfway decent used 720p DLP will way outperform his POS PJ, I'd find out his budget and not treat your comment as a joke but give it to him straight. $500 gets you a good used 720p PJ--one that is comparable to most 8" CRTs. Throw in a new bulb and say $700 gets him a decent PJ. With a bigger budget he could look at 1080p LCD PJs than many people seem to be happy with.

I would not even brother trying to help him with the POS PJ--it is going to be more hassle than it is worth. You could probably find an equivalent 480p LCD projector on ebay for around $60 if he can't spend much money.

Yep, Thats the one. What a piece of crap!!!. Like I said I got it working, but I finally tried playing something through it. Would not sync with HDMI, next easiest option, composite. Mad YUCK Why would he even bother!? I'm gonna put it back together, hand it to him, and like Dave said,"give it to him straight", that he got scammed, it works now, but expect it to quit out again. Then invite him to see what a real PJ can do. Well actually that's pretty mean...he doesn't even have a room big enough for real set up, big house, just a bunch of small rooms.

INteresting spec sheet, they dare put up 1080 resolution. Mind you, there's no 'p' at the end. Smile

I'll bet it's a 480p set. Did you see pixellation when you looked at the image?

My guess is it accepts 1080 input but is a cheap 480p LCD panel.
