Does it really matter which is a better bang for your buck? Can't you just be happy that you can afford what you have?

I thought Art switched because of light output and he wanted to go CIH. The funny thing is that he could have probably gone with a blend and new tubes for a couple of years and then bought the new Sony 4k for $15k to $20k.

A screen with 120" width is massive! To go beyond that requires a really big room. I wonder how many people out there really use screens that are wider than 10ft..

Cliff- can you talk a little more about your video chain; i.e. which blend processor, mods to G90, etc. and also what the biggest challenge was to overcome in dialing in this set up?

Cliffy is not elitist...he just needs to feel that his image is the best. I mean, anyone who talks about their projector like a resume is obviously more concerned about others perceptions than his own. It has to be the best because of a,b and c.

I think a 3 chip dlp would likely be better on a big screen in many scenes and in many ways...and be way more practical too....wayyyy more practical. Not to mention, perfect geometry and way more ansi cr.

analog, i'm surprised you're not moderating an 8 track or betamax forum...needless to say, you don't know much about digitals, you haven't seen many (at least properly setup)..and would always pick crt.

By the way...I have an XGLC, so don't think I'm in here pushing digital because I've switched over. I haven't...

cliff owned a panasonic 3000 or 4000, these can't hold a candle to a 3 chip dlp. SImple as that...

I have seen some people LCOS setups and they are lacking...and I'm not even sure where they are lacking, but I agree that they are. And yet...they are close to a crt experience...but not quite.

I had the joe kane dlp (samsung 710) and for most scenes...it looked better than my XGLC. mixed and high brightness scenes have a dimensionality and reality that you don't get with a crt. ANd the color accuracy was second to none...I mean, really good color. Better than any crt. MOst digitals have inaccurate color...and gimicks, but the Samsung was very, very pure. I had them in the room at the same time..and watched the same stuff on them, over and over. To laugh off digitals as an afterthought is quite simply wrong. There are some serious contenders.

I saw Back to the future in the theater (3 chip dlp) and the picture was flawless...it was everything you like about crt and then more! Very, very natural color...this is likely where dlp can beat out lcos, if you look at the right models. I hate unnatural and digital color...

and just about any digital would look better than a 1252...the haze in mixed or high brightness scenes is deplorable. The loudness of those beasts is ridiculous...the terrible focus is way behind the times...and, I'm not sure if a 1252 is filtered, but if it isn't...it's just not a videophiles projector...period.

This all goes back to What Alan gouger told me via phone call. His tweaked out 9500LC blew away the 45 thousand dollar digital he
had for a month or so.I think it was the latest Sim Dark 4 3 chip. I wish I could have made it up to his place in Rochester NY before he moved down to Florida( once again NYS taxes drove a business away) to see the comparison. We never had matching schedules, but he told me it was obvious. More film like and true to life than that 45k digicrap. I am sure one day Digital will equal but as of now, umm no. Unless your in the 100k+ commercial units and I still think those look like they have card board cutouts staggered at different distances , its what I call flat 3D. Smile

gouger bought that projector several years ago...and I don't think he was comparing it to a 3 chipper, and his screen wasn't huge. If it was, there would be no comparison...the ehome wouldn't have the light output.

I agree the 1252 is not a videophile projector, least of all mine with 16 000+ hours on it. It is filtered though. It made for some great TV watching and scaled DVD at 1440x960.

Last time I saw theater DLP I walked out and got my money back. It looked terrible. Great big pixels and trails behind things. Guess it depends on the vintage of the projector and the care and feeding of it.

I can understand where a Joe Kane projector may look great but let us face it. Not too many over the counter digitals are Joe Kane. Most are Joe Blow set up's and many look terrible. As for the brightness. I never was a fan of squinting while watching movies. I always run my TV's/Monitors and projectors a little on the dark side. That was one of my least favourite parts about trying to watch a digital. Having the feeling of needing sunglasses.
