The last time I turned it on the red only came on and was making lines full coverage of the raster. I'm looking into the lenses. The last time I turned it on yesterday I could see an image (with a blu- ray input of Jeff Beck) I could see the little guitar for the menu. The image is not bright enough to see on the screen and I don't want to leave it running without ensuring that the raster is not being overscaned. I suspect that whatever I adjust will be lost unless I can get the battery to charge.
If I pull the board out I'm sure I could read the battery voltage buy I expect it is low being new. I suspect that I have to get the battery charged before I do anything else?

There is no charging of the battery. It's either good or bad.
What is your brightness and contrast setting? How about the sub brightness and sub contrast?

Brightness 49%
Contrast 49%
Holding red for 3 seconds shows red CRT off then reads red vertical sh*t. Power off powers down then initialize and back on. Blue and green show horizontal lines briefly when powering off and then initialize shows on remote display and we start over.

How about your subs?
You really should test that battery before beating yourself up.

It's very unusual that the CPU board doesn't just plug and play after a battery change. If you want, you can send the whole board over for testing if the battery is OK. Otherwise I have spare 4600 CPU boards here for $75.

Also check that all the switches on the CPU board are off.

Woa....hold on there buckeroo. Who installed the battery. Did he send the board to you for the battery swap or did he do it himself???
I've never had good luck changing the batteries on the CPU without keeping power on the board with a second battery.
This is why I suggested he send it to Curt as he knows how and where to jump on the external power BEFORE removing the old battery. I just did this to my own within the last two months and posted it here in another thread so people would not forget how or why.
Sometimes when the CPU goes without power long enough, it wakes up thinking it's a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich.
Break out the paddles.....CLEAR

I just reread your original post. I see you had a memory failure initially so all your settings are gone. If the battery tests good then you probably have a failed Eeprom. I have had to change them before on these CPU boards.

While you have the board out testing the battery, would you be offended if I asked you to post a picture of your soldering job???
The slightest wisp of solder bridging two traces can cause all kinds of havoc.

Battery measures 3.65. Old battery measures 0.65. It appears the diagnosis was correct. It's the patients recovery in my less than expert hands which is in question

There are various things you can try to bring it back to life but you may be better off just getting another one from Curt.
The restart when shutting down could be that it is set to auto start mode. Turning auto start off may solve that. And your dim picture could just be that your sub settings are to low. How are the internal test patterns?

I'll have to find a magnifying glass to get a pic of the solder joints, bridging sounds like a probable thing to go wrong. And no I would not be offended; my skin is pretty thick and I do try to focus on answering "how do I fix it?"

I gave up wearing a watch for pretty much that reason.

The code is: 22691 but I dont remember if you have to be in factory test mode or not.

I don't see anything too nasty on the solder job but.... I'll get my daughter to do some snaps tomorrow and post the pics: her camera
Thanks

I just did a nice long visual inspection of my solder joints in the sunlight. I don't see anything as far as bridges or splatters. I put the CPU board back in the PJ and pressed test 1. Looking into the lenses I see horizontal lines and pressing step produces momentary test patterns maybe 1 second or second and a half. Turned it off at the power switch.
