Hi,

Exactly. It contains a non-rechargeable Lithium battery (I took some of those apart years ago)...

The internal battery is not engaged on the shelf. It is electrically connected after installation and the first power up. So if the Dallas was sitting on the shelf for a few years after it was manufactured then it would last longer then 10 years of its date code.

Ex.... date code 2000, installed 2004......should last until 2014.

Mine (projector) has a date of Sept. 2000. Thankfully, Craig will be out here soon and replacing mine.

I do wonder, what makes some chips last longer than other. From what I understand, the battery in the chip is not reliant on external power to keep it "charged". So, unless I am wrong, the chips (battery) should be going bad within a few years/months of each other depending on the year the chip was made. No?

According to the chip datasheet, the battery is not engaged or activated until the first time the chip is programmed. So theoretically, a chip that is shelved for many ears without ever having been programmed should still have a near new battery. After the chip is written once, the battery death clock starts running.

That being said, about a year and a half ago, I got 20 Dallas chips here that were supposedly new pieces. They were all 10 years old. When I went to use these chips, none of them would hold data for more than an hour after being programmed. I had to throw them all into the garbage and take a hit on them Sad

New Dallas chip came in, inserted it, got green 30 error like Craig said, reset it, 30 error went away and set now turns on.

Thanks for the info guys.

FYI, this Dallas chip lasted 11 years, it was made in 2000. Sooo nice to see a new Dallas chip with '11' as the first 2 numbers in the date code. Smile

For those that don't know, most chips have a date code on it, as in 0211.

That means the chip was made in the 11th week of 2002. FYI.

I have a number of G90 clients whose G90's I have been servicing since they were installed brand new. The first time a Dallas chip died was about eight years after installation of the projector. It seems that most chips last about eleven years, but many die much sooner even before they have reached their rated lifespan.

If you have a G90 with an original Dallas it should be changed right away at this point.

Wonder if they were counterfeit.
