So I got in a low hour G90 with a green 30 error code. It won't power up.

the service manual says that it's an issue with the NVM. All by myself I figured out that it was the Non Volatile Memory.

Sounds like the Dallas chip is dead?

Now, not having changed a Dallas chip before... do I need to upload firmware into the Dallas chip once I replace it?

Just want to make sure...

You need to read the original chip with your programmer, then save a copy, then burn that to the replacement chip..... Mr. Green

With a dead battery in the Dallas chip and the set not powering it up, will it read?

I just use the 'serial comm' program in the G90 FAQ, right? Is the RS232 cable a crossover/null cable or a straight through one?

Depends if the battery is completely dead or not.

I think I have a dead one here that gives an error code. I'll check it in my programmer tomorrow.

Thanks! Now, worst case, the battery is dead, does that Sony program have firmware that I can upload? DOn't need any memory information saved since this is a set new to me, so it's not going back into an existing install..

Curt not sure if this helps,

I know when John W commented in A thread over on AVS CRT forum A few years ago regarding Dallas chip replacement that if you arn't worried about loosing the Chassis/tube hours & so on you could just drop A new blank Dallas straight in, whether this is possible to drop A blank Dallas NOVSRAM due to not being able to recover/copying the data from original when the G90 displays an error I dont know..

Quote from John"
If you simply use a blank NOVSRAM chip (because you completely loosed the previous Dallas chip content), you can use this blank chip straight on the YA board (it will ask for for the NOVSRAM formating process, once)

You can copy a dead Dallas chip, but it is pointless as the data is lost. This is why you got error 30 in the first place.

Curt, if it is important to you that you get the serial number and hours back on the unit I can make a Dallas chip for you with the data. Honestly though, it isn't worth it.

Do this:
1) Remove the YA board and install a blank Dallas chip.
2) Turn on the G90 and wait for the GREEN 30 error to show up.
3) Press and hold switch S202 for about five seconds (switch on the back of YA board).
4) After five second you will see the display change from 30 > 31 > off.
5) The projector should now power up and be fully function. You will see all zeros in the hours and serial number section inside the service menu.

CAUTION!!!!!!!
When you depress S202 it is very easy to push the YA board against the chassis bottom and destroy your YA board. Be absolutely sure to place a finder behind the back bottom of the YA and the chassis as you press S202 or you will likely be sending your YA to me for repair Curt Wink

I would think that the correct hours would be a resale value plus.

Probably a good idea given the age of these machines now.

I just a little surprised the pj doesn't turn on for a simple Dallas chip failure. You may need to reload the firmware through the RS232 port. let us know how the reset goes. Maybe thats all it needs.

In those AVS links I posted there was A reader/Writer for $48usd that looked alright Curt..

My G70 started bringing up error codes on startup couple years back "10" "88" thus changing the Dallas solved it
and was able to retreive the tube & Chassis hours luckly.. But I didnt remove the old dallas untill I was ready to
copy the Data so the internal batt still retained Anough charge..

Green error 30 is no big deal and is always a Dallas chip failure. Green error 11 is FW failure.

Both are easy to recover if you know how Wink

If the FW were bad Curt would get error 11 long before error 30 had a chance to show up. Baring the remarkable, this is just a simple dead Dallas chip. The G90 will never start up with a dead Dallas chip EVER. It will do exactly what it is doing and sit there with a green 30 on the display every time.

You'll also get a 30 error if you loose the +5v regi on the YA board.

Wink Just don't unplug it or you will need to reload again.

Need to test some other G90 boards in it, then I'll put it aside until the Dallas chips show up.

Just curious, could you back-feed power into the old dallas chip while it's in the reader and recover the information?
