After ~20 years I dusted off my Technics SL-Q200 turntable. Unfortunately the needle was damaged in storage.
I looking for an inexpensive Audio Technica AT122LP or similar needle replacement or aftermarket.

Yes, I came across an old posting for a 122LP, I just missed it though.
I see a lot of the budget replacement cartridges and a couple really expensive ones.
I've visited some web sites, but I'm still looking. I'm trying not to invest too much $$ just to play around with some old LP's

I've got a generic one off a Technics turntable if you want it. plastic cover on it and everything. It came off an SL-B2, a low end belt drive. Yours for the cost of $3.00 shipping or whatever it is.

Thanks for the offer. Just received in the mail an Audio Technica 311EP 30$. It's no 122LP but it will do.
Just having some fun with the vinyl. 
I swear when it comes to sting instruments CD can't even come close. IMO

Ok, but what about SACD or DVD-A? Or did you really mean optical is inferior regardless of the sampling rate?

Even CD is of significantly higher fidelity than vinyl, let alone high-res.
Yet vinyl often sounds better, subjectively, to me. And vinyl has been the most enjoyable home audio I've ever heard.
Go figure. Sometimes accuracy isn't everything.
And I say that as a hardcore no-compromise objectivist. An objectivist-jihadist, practially.

That one I'm not so sure about. 
Obviously it has superior S/N (signal to noise ratio), channel separation, dither/wow/flutter.
And vinyl has that dreaded pop and LF rumble.
I can't put my finger on it but for me there is just some music that has a better sound coming off vinyl.

I agree. But it's not from an accuracy standpoint. I think it's from a subjective preference for the distortions of vinyl.
From a "which is closest to the studio master" perspective, it's CD hands-down.
From a "which sounds 'best'" perspective, I prefer vinyl frequently (but not always), and often by a large margin.
Some of my oldest and most favorite albums were an entirely new revelation once I picked them up on vinyl.
I think particularly for older albums, it's likely because vinyl IS the reference, really. For some of the newer stuff it's a mixed bag. For instance, Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' I thought was very disappointing on vinyl. The Roots is a horrible disappointment, gosh I wish their stuff was recorded better.
But some of that older stuff especially, like of the Santana era, is stunning on vinyl. And even some newer stuff, like Jeff Buckley, Nas, Outkast, Tom Waits, My Morning Jacket, etc, were just amazing on vinyl, sometimes blowing the crap out of the CD. Really surprising, sometimes.
I'm more of a newcomer to vinyl, but a great deal of my music purchases over the last year or so, probably 75% or more, have all been vinyl (mostly old/used, but a fair amount of new stuff too)
