Can someone who uses a Sony please explain how to best use the memory structure in the G90 ?

I've had Marquee's and NEC's and generally prefer the NEC's auto choosing of created memories, but the Marquee's system is fine too.

With the Sony, do you have to "make" an input for every frequency ? Do you name them ? Does the projector then choose them automatically whenever the same resolution is detected ?

I've never really attempted to figured out the memory structure but you really don't need to. For different frequency inputs, the projector auto creates the files. You have to do a geometry/convergence settup for each one though.

And it saves them automatically or something ?

This is for a G70 similar to a G90.

For RGB input B there are 9 Preset Memory blocks that auto sync and load based on frequency. 1 being the lowest freq.. Numbers 3 and 4 usually load for typical HD video. Preset #9 is reserved for YPbPr HDTV on input A.

There are 89 User Memory blocks starting at #10. When you setup an input registration/convergence this is saved to the matching Preset memory (freq.). If that Preset memory was already saved, the next available User memory block is used. The User memory blocks fill up on a first come first serve basis.

With each new input a Preset Memory block (1-9) loads then saves as a User Memory block. When that frequency is encountered again the User block now loads.

It is good practice to setup/converge Preset Memory blocks #2,3,4, and maybe #5 with the internal oscillator firsts. That way each new signal stands chance of syncing to give a rough convergence starting point.

Is this what Sony was doing when they advise you to do your initial setup without a signal ?

Is there a point at which you can choose what frequency the internal oscillator outputs ? For example, can I disconnect my 1080i signal, pop up the internally generated test patterns then CHOOSE the same frequency as 1080i somehow ?

Are the Preset Memory blocks "factory default" or something ? Which leads me to the question, why when I do a "Reset to Factory" do my settings not all return to the "null" position ?

Exactly.

No that is fixed and spans the PJ's range of operating frequencies.

Not by frequency but you can by memory block number if you have the latter firmware. You can force User memory X to load. You need to access the extended service menu. I believe the G90 was much better in the memory management area then the G70. Perhaps a G90 owner can chime in.

Yes they span the operating range of frequencies.

I don't know why the factory settings are not closer to NULL (128) I know at the factory the PJ is setup for a 120" screen or throw distance I can't remember. And maybe that is not the mid point for the PJ. For example the PJ operates from 60 to 300 inch diagonal so the factory setup at 120" is not the mid point? Just a theory.

And if your PJ is like a lot of people's enough components were changed out that the factory reset wouldn't be much help.

In the for what it is worth department I set all my controls to 128 before all the mechanical setups, aligning the yokes (horizon), CPC magnets/tabs (AQP, DQP), tube Toe, PJ Square, etc.

Is there a simple and easy method you use to set all controls to null before you start mechanical adjustments ?

Thanks for the help.

With the latter firmware and some controls ie Zone, if you hold the reset button for 5-30 seconds you get the options reset to Service, Factory, or 128. Most do not and you would need to manually set the control to 128.

Again this is a G70, the G90 may have more advanced features available.

I've done that, thinking it was a "global" reset, but I don't recall there being an option to reset to "128", I chose "Factory" over "Service". Is the option to reset to 128 found in the same area ?

Do you need to be in Pro user mode or in the other user mode (tried it in both modes and it makes no difference)? Or does it matter ?

The firmware is 1.11, which I believe is the last firmware...

You need to be in Service mode or Extended Service mode on a G70. You must reset each tube individually for all controls.

Enter service mode select one tube R,G or B. Then select ZONE, hold down the reset button on the PJ or the remote until your reset options appear. What options does it give you? there should be three, Service, Factory, Factory 128 or something like that.

Yep, its there, but only in Zone, no other adjustment has the "128" option, which I find kind of interesting...

You can perform one trick. On the 1st setup using one of the internal oscillators (#2 is recommended) Null all the settings (128).

Then hold the memory button for 5-30 seconds and save as the registration data to all memory blocks. Or mem copy.
