My taste in movies is usually in agreement with the top critics at Rotten Tomatoes. If they like it, I'll probably like it, and vice-versa. Unstoppable was a huge exception. I thought it was cliched, predictable and implausible. I found it so bad I almost turned it off a couple of times.
Top RT critics rated 87% positive. I would have thought it would have been in the 15-20% range. I'm obviously missing something.

87% seems crazy high...I watched it probably 3 months ago....From what I remember there seemed nothing special about it.
I just finished watching "Kill the Irishman" if you like mob flixs this one was very entertaining, and based on a true story.
A couple other good ones was "The Adjustment Bureau" & "Source Code", both were kind of chick flixs with a Sci-Fi twist.
Mike

I haven't watched Unstoppable, but the second I saw the trailer, I immediately thought: RUNAWAY TRAIN ripoff!!!! ACK!
If you want a brilliant little classic, check it out. It's one of my all-time favorite films. A miraculously unique adaptation, an American film directed by a Russian director from a script that was originally written by Akira Kurosawa that he was never able to film himself.
Jon Voight delivers one of the best acting performances in all of film.
I have the uber-rare soundtrack on vinyl as well!
Check it out some time:

I don't know how they're getting away with this, but the entire movie is on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XO0OnH1BHq0&feature=related
I watched the first segment. To me, the story line is interesting, but the dialog was trerrible. And other than Voight the acting was pretty bad. Maybe I'm not judging it fairly because of it's age.
Maybe they should have just remade Runaway Train instead of making Unstoppable. With a better script Runaway Train could be a really good movie.

Yep, Eric Roberts isn't a good actor like Chris Pine is.

Yep, Chris Pine isn't an overactor actor like Eric Roberts is. |
There I corrected it.

When I watched the trailer the first thing that came to mind was Runaway Train. I think that was probably a better movie.

So I just watched Unstoppable.
This cements in my mind the fact that Tony Scott apparently slept through all of film school, and only learned maybe one or two techniques.
I didn't realize that it was even possible for anyone to top Michael Bay in the thoroughly-unnecessary-360-pans department. But Mr. Scott here sets a while new standard of using only one cinematic technique until all viewers are nauseous.
That being said, he gets some credit in my book from shying away from CG in this movie, a growing pet peeve of mine. (And he shot on film too!)
Barely worth the rental.

I don't know if I agree with you on this Chris. I don't notice 360 pans, but I do notice if a film has camera movement in it or not. Booms, dollies, etc. I like camera movement.

I Was getting sea-sick. I had to move my chair back in the room so I wasn't so close to the screen.
I mean, I understand the current fad of fast-cutting and crazy/jerky camera movements and fast pans and such in action sequences. But you don't have to do that THE WHOLE MOVIE.
You don't need to move the cameras all over the place to create the impression that everyone is moving SUPER DUPER EXTRA FAST when they are all SITTING AT A CONFERENCE ROOM TABLE. It's a f*cking conference call, not a high-speed pursuit. Relax.
I hate that. It's lazy one-note film-making. I'm looking at you, Paul Greengrass!

I agree, although I'm probably less offended by too much camera movement than you are. Guy Ritchie for instance, I love his early stuff.

I am unapologetically a fan of really boring movies where nothing much happens.
Most people would be more annoyed trying to sit through a Tarkovksy film. But I'd rather that than the frantic silliness that's become so popular of late.
But I hate 3-D too, so maybe it's just all the cranky-old-man in me...

DO any of you not know Unstoppable is A TRUE STORY!!!! IT REALLY HAPPENED!!! Its not made up. So maybe if you view the movie through the correct glasses you will see that it is an amazing story. The only untrue part of the story is that the train was going 55mph unmanned not 70mph. Although 55mph with something that huge is insanely fast. AS with all movies they do exaggerate things to make it more dramatic... But it sitll happened and they sopped it the way to movie protrays..although a little less dramatic!!!

This movie was so irritating, it made me hate the true story.
