I used one of those, and used to own 2. I think I actually sold them on eBay once I got my second Fluke 77.
Back in my day, we had to heat the soldering iron in a fire next to the workbench....

Nice! I've been without a soldering iron for about 3 years now. Getting ready to pick up one. Anything special i need or can i simply use a pencil type and what wattage is best. I have my eye on a 80 watt.

Cheap iron is fine and watts is good. I would also invest in a cheap digital multimeter. You could get by with that old analog one but for what the price of a cheap DMM is your better of with one. Testing is more accurate..

Around 20 bucks for a cheap DMM depending on where you get it at and what features.
Probably should get some test wires with alligator clips on the ends so your not poking around in there with the tv on. Usually a packet is cheap also.

FOr tube stuff, frankly, get a soldering GUN if the stuff is point to point wiring. You want the old Weller type with the nuts that hold the tip into place, not their newish crap that uses screws. eBay- $20 for the old kind. For PC board work, you want an iron for sure, but taking chassis mounted capacitors out will require a gun.

I would not recommend it. Go to Sears or radio shack or whatever you have nearby. Just get a gun unit like Curt suggested.

So i'd better get the gun then. I never had much luck with the cheaper pencil type anyway.

Anybody wanna help me with the procedure of removing the lens of the crt and removing the old pva material? I can't seem to reach drh4683. Watched his video. I wonder if he'd do it. I'm just too nervous for this kind of thing. How much would it cost just to replace it? If you can find one.

DON'T DO THAT! The front lens/face of the tube is NOT designed to come off, you'll kill yourself trying.
I'd check some vintage TV websites to see if some 80 year old guy has one buried in his shop somewhere. I'll call Able Electronics and see if I can get a hold of THAT old guy... nope, he has nothing.
Try Hivac:

Never done business with them before, so you're on your own. THe local guy has nothing anymore, his stock is long gone.

My analog meter has been down for around 35+ years. Where can I get the 14 volt ( I think) battery for it?
Haven't seen one since the late 70's early 80's. was a little rectangular thing, I still have it in a box someplace.
Ran into the same problem with a 71 pickup. Yea, I still have a dwell meter, found it in a box, blew the dust out of it, then now how does this hook up??? Even the internet is no help on using my old slide rule, that technology seems to have vanished.
