Hello all,

First of all I have never owned a crt projector before and am trying to learn as much as possible as soon as possible.

I have a chance to pick up a Electrohome 9500LC Ultra for really cheap ($250) from someone who is moving and cannot take it with them. According to the owner, it originally came from nasa and he had it completely gone through about 4 years ago. New tubes, etc. I went over and looked at it last night and checked the tubes. Shined a flashlight on them and they look great from what I can tell (referencing pictures I have seen online). It does have two issues though.

1. The convergence is a bit off. I am assuming this is a simple recalibration fix.

2. The picture will drift a little left or right on occasion. Not a huge amount, but it is noticeable. He stated that it started doing this after he was messing around with is multiplier box hooking up a new dvd player.

Both of these issue were there the whole 2 hours I was checking out the projector and talking with the guy. The image did not change in brightness, contrast, color, etc.

Are either of these things major issues? What do you think is wrong with projector? Could it have a loose connection or something? I am guessing here, and the guy was definitely not a rocket scientist [ nasa reference Smile ] He barely knew how to select the correct video source.

I am suppose to pick it up late Saturday and would like to know if I am getting a lemon or a great deal.

Thanks

Hello

I'll take it if you don't!!!!!! It likely would benefit from a magnetics alignment. Also, one needs to allow a one hour warmup to seriously judge convergence stability. Where are you located?

I am in the Twin Cities, MN.

You mentioned an hour for warm-up. I was there for about 2 last night. Convergence did not change. It was off the same amount the whole time. That is why I was thinking it was a simple recalibration.

The drift would occur ever minute or 2 for about 10 seconds. On a 120" 16-9 screen it was about an inch or so horizontal shift and then it would go back. Seem to do it to the left if memory servers me right.

Hello

That is unusual, something drifting in the power supply or the horizontal board. If you are skittish on this, have the seller contact me 480 368 7434.

I would think if you buy it and someone on here can't help you resolve the issue with but a few hours of learning and probably no more than $200 in potential replacement boards/power supply, you could always part-out the machine and get your money back. Heck, you'd probably make some money to boot. A quick search of the Buy and Sell for 9500LC should convince you this to be true...don't know first hand, but that is one way of going. I bought a Sony G90 under a even less-certain circumstance a month ago and appear to have it sold for a modest profit.

good luck!

Even with the cost for me to ship that to Australia that would be sale of the century, i dont care what is bloody wrong with it!! You can still get all parts quite easily for these im lead to believe, and VDC still sells them brand new.

Youd be FN mad to pass that up.

I agree, grab it.

Check the P14 voltage to make sure its at 6.35v and also check to make sure the bellows are not sweaty or leaking Glycol.

I will be picking it up later today. Will check the voltages as soon as I get home and post the results. Have to lookup where to check but I am sure I can find it online.

First thing....

THANK YOU ALL! I really appreciate your help and patients for a newby.

Secondly,

Got it home. Have it bolted to a pallet on wheels for the moment (using the ceiling mount). Have to get help putting it up on the actual ceiling. Flipped the h and v connectors so the image was correct for floor mounting. Cleared ALL the memory on it and ran it through the convergence setup. Ran the voltage check after it has been on for a couple of hours. 6.27 volts is what it reads. I have not had it do anything strange (drift) so far. Image is rock solid. Driving it 1920x1080 from my laptop. Actually typing this on the projector Smile It is a little fuzzy, but hey I am not going to complain. I think I can get it a bit better focused once I get it permanently mounted. I touched one of the baffles. Boy are they hard to get at without ripping the projector apart. felt dry so I am assuming they are probably ok.

Thirdly,

Now to go off topic. I picked up a dvdo iscan hd box today for $100. It did not come with a remote. The projector only has 2 bnc inputs and I needed svideo and component (hdmi will come later). No clue if this is a good one or not. Have not had a chance to play with it as I am having to much fun with the projector. Any thoughts on it would be appreciated

Thanks again for all of your help and I am sure I am going to have a lot more questions as I try and educate myself.

I'm not sure what you can do with with the old Iscan, if it's the one I just looked up it will pass through 720P or 1080i or upscale 480i ,576i, and 480P up to 1080P. Upscaling 480 to 1080P was popular 5 or 6 years ago but it's not true HD.
You could presumably send component video YpYbYr (480P) from a DVD player to the iscan and have it transcoded to RGB and upscaled to 1080P. You'll need a VGA to 5BNC breakout cable.
Forget about 480i composite or S-video, it's useless.

Just a quick note on the Iscan HD. If yours is the HD and not the HD+, I don't believe you will be able to pass through higher resolutions video that is from HDCP sources. If the source is not HDCP, no worries. From the manual: "The iScan™ HD+ incorporates all the features of the iScan HD and adds scaling of high definition sources (720p, 1080i) as well as HDCP compliance over DVI."

That said, if you have old laserdiscs and SVHS tapes laying around you don't want to get of just yet, the IScan box may be useful for a while. Alternatively, you may choose to invest in an HDFury3 to take HDMI from your DVD player using its upconverted output. As many decent DVD players (the Oppo DV-981HD, for example) use almost the same exact up converter as the iScan HD, this should fine.

Of course, there are many other paths as well -- be sure to check out the tail-end of the CRT Primer entitled "Hooking it all together" and the HDMI inputs for the marquees.

It is a Iscan HD and not the HD+. I plan to use it for some older equipment I have laying around. The projector came with two thick (about the size of a quarter) 35 foot long cables. One is a a vga(15 pin) to bnc-5 and the other is bnc-5 to bnc-5. From the looks of the cables I would say they probably cost as much new as I gave for the projector. I hooked the Iscan up to a computer monitor and plugged in a dvd player. Got it to come up on the screen. Have not yet got it working with the projector, but I am sure I will after playing with the output settings a bit.

I am now looking at the HDMI options. HDFury3 and the Moome. I see the Moome has an internal (VIM) and an external. Leaning toward the external. Cost is less and will give me more options later on as I can use it on something else. I also see that the Moome is coming out with a hdmi v.14 version that support 3D. Do not really care about the 3D aspect, but wondering about the hdmi v.14
