I currently have a 100 inch screen with a nice picture on a Runco 933. The wife is letting me build a "mancave" out of our carport this year. It will be for the sole purpose of not having to share certain space with the kids. It will consist of a simple sports themed room. I am thinking it would be real nice to go with a huge 10 foot screen. Can you say blend?!?! Will use two 1208s/2's with HD-145 lenses. Can't help feeling greedy.....I am wondering how good 3d looks with a blend....anyone successful? Or am I simply wanting to push the envelope too much?

Hello
A blend well done will be fantastic, I have one here today. You can expect a throw ratio around .95 which enables a large screen width in a smaller room. Remember that a 1.0 gain screen fabric is a must, and make sure your blend processor can do the vertical rates that 3D requires.

Say Tim, you may be able to answer this....can you use a screen with a gain higher than 1.0 with a blend?

It is not recommended, and I asked a lot of experienced people about this, the answer consistently was that higher gains invite color shift problems.

I suspect it also becomes harder to match the blend perfectly, since the gain falls off as you get out of the "hot spot." You could match the blend for a viewer sitting in the center, and find that it doesn't match perfectly for someone sitting off on either side. 1.0 gain screens shouldn't have a problem with that.

I don't see how wanting a 10-foot screen is greedy by any means - especially if you want to entertain and seat more than 5-6 people... At the point of seating 8-9 people, a 10- to 12-foot screen not only isn't greedy, but starts to be pretty practical.
It always makes me shake my head when I see some of the CEDIA award-winning rooms... They're these magnificent rooms that the owners spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to build... They're huge rooms - expansive, even - beautifully designed with great equipment and seating for a 10-12 people, but then you realize the screen is a 110-120-inch diag screen - no bigger than the screen in MY little DIY cheap-ass room! WTF!?!?! Seriously?!?!? The viewing angles would SUCK!
So, no - not greedy. You just want the "big screen" experience, and it's something that we were all sort of technically limited from achieving 10 years ago, but is now achievable.
Probably wouldn't do a blend if it were me, but I recognize and understand everybody has different priorities and preferences.

Periodically there is a guy on the local CL that liste a 10' motorized screen for $500. I am sure he would take less as I have seen it off and on for the last 3 months. Check out the Dallas area CL if your interested.

I know many like to bash THX, but I find their recommendation on seating distances, image brightness, and ambient noise to be quite good and very close to my preferences as these all trace back to when George Lucas was try to get good standards into commercial theaters so patrons had good viewing experiences. Also, when I say "widescreen" I mean a widescreen movie aka "scope" movie not 16:9 "widescreen".</disclaimer>
I agree with SC (although have a multirow theater IS greedy!). My current CIH screen is just over 9.5' wide. We have a two row theater. My first row is very close the the 20th century fox recommendation for ideal viewing angle for a widescreen movie (just under 1.15x screen width, THX ideal is closer to 1x the screen width) and my back row is a bit over the THX recommendation for a commercial theater's back row (about 1.5x screen width though they consider almost 2x as acceptable).
If my screen were smaller, the back row's image would be too small. My screen size does not support a 3 row theater as much closer would be too big for comfortable viewing (THX recomments the closest widescreen viewing as around .9 x screen width).
I also like the THX recommendations for brightness. In a commercial theater, they want 14-16 ft.lamberts. Our theaters can have no ambient lighting (we don't need pesky exit signs and lights to show where the stairs are) so I find that I can tolerate closer to 12 fl. lamberts (currently I have 12.6 in widescreen and almost 16 in 16:9--I would not mind if they were both closer to 14-15). I find that although I "tolerated" under 8 ft. lamberts in the past (8" CRT on a 106" slightly positive gain 16:9 screen not running in "fry tubes" mode) and made excuses that it was good enough, I never really liked it and after being over 12, I could never go back. So I would really consider that in any scenerio. I think in the size you are stating, you need to blend.

I see no reason why you can't run 3D...

Yes I have 2 Barco 1208s/2 units. I now have 1 set of HD-145 lens's....only 1 more to go. And I am not expecting setup to be too bad as I decided to make a large custom mount that will house both projectors to hang from. And the 1208's are relatively easy to setup as compared to the NEC in my basement. The expensive part on this project will be the modded boards from Greg Eisermann. I will make my own screen. I am not sure if I will be using a PC to control the blend or not but we will see. It's the cost of the building materials for the room that will be expensive. Was at Home depot last night and prices have jumped on almost everything. Drywall is 2/3's more than it was 3 years ago. I guess that's what it takes for not having contaminated stuff from China.

Ugh, Home Depot. Everything I seem to buy from there in the last year has been junk. People complain about Harbor Freight, but at least I know it isn't going to last going in.

You know what....I have a green house I bought from HF 4 years ago and it's still almost as good as new.
