Got a customer that got a hold of me through eBay, and I sold her a HV module for an old Zenith PRo 851. Turns out that didn't do the trick. Some other TV tech diagnosed it, she ordered the part, the TV tech didn't return her calls, so she installed the part, but either she installed it incorrectly or he misdiagnosed it in the first place as the set still doesn't work.
She's willing to go into an HD projector. Was wondering if anyone wanted to make some spare cash and assist with the install/hookup if she ends up going for something like a DWIN 700?
Just starting to email back and forth now...

It is indeed in Ohio. Got an email back, she's willing to buy/upgrade, but she can't do it on her own..

Curt / All -
I am only an hour and change away from her, but am not yet knowledgeable enough to get paid for anything beyond a simple ready-set-go. That is, presuming you have it all setup (astig, electronic focus, etc) and ready for her approximate throw distance, I could follow the manual to do basics like:
- hanging it
- tweak the toe-in and optical focus
- finish electronic convergence
- etc
I'd do that for some ECP parts + gas money and a PBJ with some milk -- if you think this newbie is up for it. I have tools and am easily mechanically experienced enough to hang it. I won't build a hush-box, though. Also, I don't have colorimeter yet, so couldn't do greyscale/gamma adjustments as they should be done. And how can the thing weigh only 65lbs? Only other downside is I'm an engineer, which always means trouble!
All of that said, I am perfectly willing to volunteer my time to help whomever can help her, just so I can be around an expert who can do a job right. All I'd ask is they answer all my dumb Qs while we work! I'd love to see how this looks compared to my ECP. To sweeten the pot: if someone wants to lead this effort, they can have free room and board at my house for a night if they can offer advice/insight on my setup!

Ok, that sounds do-able. I suggest that you charge her about $250, and I"ll load you up with all the ECP parts you can handle as well.
Let me throw a basic package at here around a DWIN 700, a Moome box and wiring. The DWIN is pretty easy to set up, I can do the basics here for setup. THe DWIN is smaller and about the same weight as an ECP, actually probably a bit lighter. It's virtually silent, so no issues there. THe ceiling bracket is a basic U bracket, very simple to install.
Thanks for posting, I'll see if she'll go for it.
Curt

Probably a DWIN 700. Trying to keep costs low.
I'm about to send her an email proposing a DWIN 700 w/moome box and she goes out and gets an HDMI A/V receiver and BR player and HD box. If that sticker shocks her, then I've also offered a cheaper option for now with a DVDO line doubler on top of the DWIN to use her existing composite wiring.
Not being there, I have no idea whether it's possible to run an RGBHV cable to the set or not..

Yep, he's the first guy that came to mind..
Yeah, I hate that word 'irregardless'. There's another similar word that I personally used for years, until it was pointed out that there's no such word. I felt like such an idiot...
The word was....'AGREEANCE'
As in: 'I'm in agreeance with you"

I just want to be sure if I end up doing this that I deliver more than I promise...which means knowing what I'm in for. It would be more fun for me to help somebody and learn a bit at the same time though, I'm sure.

Matt | YOU CAN DO IT!
I set up a Dwin once and it was no harder than a Barco / using only the built in keypad.
Biggest problem was using all of the tube face, with H maxed out it was only using about 75% of the width but some machines are just designed that way. Rest is fairly straightforward, geometry and electronic convergence through the remote control.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Dragan! Go way back to having initially set up your first 7"ES machine. Now, imagine going into someone else's home to assume some responsibility over a major investment they've just made. Are you feeling cautious? That said, I'm sure Curt will communicate with her (and me) such that a blind chimp could do it.
Curt -- If no one else shows interest in coming days and the client is game, PM me and we can hammer out the "putting it all together" details. I just don't want to be running out for interconnects, adapters, the one tool I didn't bring, etc OR discover some widget doesn't like to send negative sync, etc...then the fun starts morphing into work. My schedule is quite flexible, weekdays included, as I manage a lab at a university.
cheers,
Matt

It's called being cocky. What you described is exactly what I did my first time out.

Matt | exactly, I helped out recently and the first time out the machine had problems and even the Fury was acting wierd=major frustration + 2 hours drive time. Second time it all dialed in so easy it was like I sleep-walked through the process. Luckily the owner had the machine pre-hung both times, that helped a lot.
So it all depends on little factors you have no control over. I have to say though when it all goes well and you know you got the set-up nailed with Stig, flare, and focus and the pic is fantastic it feels really good and even the drive home is relaxing. Big smile on the owners face is rewarding too.
My advice is if you run into a big snag don't sit there and fight it for hours. Re-group and come back later when your fresh and relaxed.
