|
|
Ok, I have tried a Sony Blu-ray player, Xbox 360 (250GB), Toshiba HD DVD player and a laptop and all have revealed a bazaar active area vs. illuminated area observation.
The active area is presented in correct aspect if I use Full [Wide Mode setting], but there appears to be an additional area amount on all four sides. The amount is ~5%. It is almost like the opposite of overscan (blanking?). Are the LCoS panels themselves larger than 1920x1080?
This extra area defines the black level (calibrated or otherwise) as it is adding light in addition to any ambient light (mind you I am using a 120" wide 2.4 aspect screen).
Anyone got any ideas on this? Blanking and keystone are set to zero.

Are you talking about light spill from the optical path that puts a border around the 1920x1080 image?

I guess so. I would expect the cylindrical lens assy to produce not such a rectangular 'border' as you mention. I do not have this on my JVC RS20. But aside from it being present, the seeming high BL (even compared to the RS20) makes me think something else is amiss. At this point my two year old plasma in a controlled environment has a low black level.
I am not sure if I should try Sony's 90-day warranty and have them look at it or just take a two-bill hit and sell it as-is.

That is normal for Sony.

That's annoying lol. Looks like I'm building a black frame around the screen.

I did notice this as well on my VPL-VW50, but with a black frame around the screen it isn't noticable unless your looking for it (which I was since I read this post )
So yeah probably normal for the Sonys

Both Sony's and JVC's LCoS chips are larger than 1920x1080. This allows for digital panel alignment adjustments in 1 pixel increments. I personally never noticed the extra panel area, but then again I have always had some sort of velvet masking at the screen edges which does a nice job absorbing the stray light from the unused panel edges.

For folks with 16:9 screens it will not be a problem. Unfortunately, I have a 2.4 screen. Time to get some black velvet masking! BTW, the JVC RS20 doesn't exhibit this problem at all. They must be doing something right/better.

Do you just have it zoomed out to the 2.4 aspect ratio? Or do you have a scaler/lens combo?

Using the CIH approach. When not zoomed in for 16:9 content there are portions of the screen, naturally, but the JVC doesn't exhibit this observation made on the Sony. Not using anything external.
