Runs for 5 seconds, then goes "CLUNK" and PP comes up, wont respond to remote and has to be switched off by the main switch, there is a transistor on the DEF board that gets reasonably warm...

Tubes are glowing around the neckboard ends as normal, but no picture output what so ever, and there is no red fault indicators glowing on the DEF board....

When looking at this transistor, 3 legs on it as usual, looking at the front where the number is, the left leg and right leg show zero ohms, left to middle shows 390 ohms, and so does right to middle.

Does this mean its rooted?

And if so, is this the correct replacement? http://www.westfloridacomponents.com/T182/Transistor++2SC4288A+Bipolar+NPN+Toshiba.html

LED D023 in the middle of the DEF board flashes when the clunk occurs 5 seconds after startup, and flashes again when the power is turned off.

I had(have) problem with that transistor, and for me the failure of the transistor always generated an FC error code and D023 lit all time when I turned on. That zero ohm is normal between the two side legs.
Do you have any signal applied to the input when you turning on?

Yeah there is a signal on s-video, and if i wait 5 seconds i cant change sources to RGB ( or do anything else for that matter )

Ive been using it on s-video for quite a while now with no issues.

I replaced a heap of caps on 2 of the 3 boards at the back of the projector, there was a couple in there starting to leak, but that made no change.

Let's try without any signals applied. If it is stay on, then try an internal test pattern. Also this might be a system board issue, try to reseat them.

Yeah ive reseated them, that was my first thought actually. Ive reseated all 3 in the cage, ive had all 3 boards at the back under the cover out and recapped 2 of those boards, looked at the DEF board and Conv and Focus boards, and i cant see anything that would cause this. Ill unplug the sources and test now.

Thanks Smile

If it doesn't work then it's time for seeking a friend who also have a PG and swap boards... DEF and maybe system bd.

Ok, i can now add some more to this, if i drop the GAIN board out, i get 3 tubes flashing rapidly ( like its on a real low frequency ) and i dont get that CLUNK noise, however i still get the PP on the rear plate.

Ive got the system, wave, video, and gain CTL boards out, im going to take them to a friend's place and test them in his 9PG ( exactly the same board numbers in his, which is lucky i spose... )

Ill report what i find when i return, Gjacky, thanks very much for your help Wink
