I was knocked out most of last week with the Flu. Nasty fever, the whole shebang. Damn you Darwin!
Anyway, I rented the whole first season of the Twilight Zone on BD, a show that is LOOONG before my time (I'm a youngin'...)
I'm a few discs into it, not sure if I'll get through the whole season before it has to go back to the store, but it's a REALLY great 4:3 B&W film transfer. They really did a fantastic job with the production values of this show, and even for the older crowd who grew up with this back in the day on TV, it's really worth seeing in HD, some of the episodes are just beautifully done.
Revisiting it doesn't convince me that it deserves recovering its 'best TV show ever' status from The Wire, but it still holds a very strong second place!
Really glad to see such a seminal show like this treated so well.
Surprised there aren't more fogey-nerds hanging around these parts with all the CRT dinosaurs talking about Twilight Zone...
Anyway, if you're looking to kill some time with a classic, this BD set is one well-worth picking up. And you know, buy it through here or whatever to support the forum if you can.

Is this pillar-boxed in a 16:9 window or really 4:3?

Where the F* did this come from? | Wife and I concluded that only a 15 year old girl would like the Twilight movies. So, I was teasing Chris. I see I forgot the smile. Oops.
And that is where the F came from.

It's pillar-boxed on the disc obviously. It's 1080p24 BD, and the standard only allows for 16:9.
The menus are 16:9, but the menus are terribly rudimentary.

Yeah, uh, definitely The Twilight ZONE, not the teeny-bopper crap.
I had to suffer through a few minutes of one of those Twilight movies because it was the only DVD in the house, and I had to test a system and too lazy to run to the van. During those several minutes I thought I had been captured by the Iranians, I was sure it was a form of torture. It was the cinematic equivalent of being hit in the nuts with the tine of a hammer.

??? How else would they do it? The only other option is to crop the footage down to 16:9, and that is BLASPHEMOUS!

Didn't they do that with Hogan's Heroes?
Would it be better to run a custom rez for something like this say 1440x 1080p?

Encode it 4:3 in the 16:9space and let us vertically stretch it. Like an anamorphic 4:3 DVD.

Ah, yes. I suppose in theory yeah that would be better, particularly as we move beyond 1080p displays.
But it's not in the standards.
I'd like to see anamorphic encoding or a straight 2.35 format for scope films too. Unlikely ever to happen on BD.
I think non-square sampling aspect ratios are done for, and frankly: good riddance!
