I'm going to send my runco 980ultra for lens replacement
On the way I'm looking to replace the fans due to heavy noise
Any recommendation to which type and brand should I look into?

Or do you mean Tube replacement? If so, what are you being quoted, as chances are I can sell you mint tube 980 Ultra for far less than what a Runco dealer would quote you to retube.
For the 980 Ultra, I do NOT recommend fan mods. I've seen two through here with fan 'mods' that cooked the entire set due to less air volume being moved through the set.

Yes I have been playing with this problem last seven years or so.
Every good performance crt have too much noise for me. My two first ES focus Barcos had much lover noise level that later EM focus projectors, so problem have actually get worse during years. I have played lot with fan mods, but I have found out that you can't get acceptable noise level without lowering air flow dramatically.
Even you could find little lower noise fans with same air flow and pressure, that isn't still good enough. Most noise is coming from air flow inside projector not from fans mechanics.
Only silent solution is to build hushbox with totally isolated air circulation from theater room, so cooling capacity can be kept original or even better. Here's my old theater with that kind cooling system, new theater will have similar.

Really? My Xtra doesn't sound like air flow noise.

Is there multiple small fans?
80 mm or smaller are noisy, 120 mm fans gives same air flow with much lower noise. Rubber mounting is also needed to prevent mechanical noise to chassis and grilles need to go first.

The PGXtra is the ultimate in air flow noise...in my opinion. The fans are not loud at all, pull one out and you will see, it is the turbulence generated in the chassis that is the problem.
At this stage of the game, who really cares about logevity of the projector...knock the fans back a bit with resistors or diodes, don't run a high scan rate, and try to get some extraction off your ceiling. And if you're really ambitious, build a hushbox.
