Tim, how are you trying to do it when you say "standard" migrate?

Yes, with ethernet cable, could not find source machine. Had some luck, was able to move iPhoto pix with thumb drive, kinda stuck trying to move e.mails and bookmarks.

Ah. Were they connected to a network, or just connected together computer-to-computer with nothing but the cable between? If you're just connecting computer-to-computer, the safest way to do it is to manually configure TCP/IP...
One machine's IPv4 address is 192.168.0.2, and the other 192.168.0.3. Then, set both machines like this:
mask: 255.255.255.0
router 192.168.0.1
Then, they should both see and talk to each other.
So, how big is your home user directory?
One way you can do this is on the new (target) machine, create a secondary admin account (not a bad idea anyway), create a user account with the same name as the account on the old machine (so, if it's "timtim" on the old machine, make one called "timtim" on the new machine).
Then, you just copy the entire user directory from the old (source) machine over the top of the one on the new (target) machine. Then, log out of your user account, and into the new account and bada bing... It's an exact duplicate.
Only problem with that is you usually need an external hard drive to do it because user's home directories are usually much larger than a 32- or 64GB flash drive. You could do it piece by piece, but even the "Library" directory where mail is stored can get awfully big.
Did you try the FireWire method? Is this an old iMac and a new iMac?
I'll PM you with my phone number.
