Real funny guys!!
Got this back from Dale
Tom,
With no description of the "issue" with the bellow material, I'm going to take a guess based on the Cargille data sheet you provided.
Our in house Materials/Chemist guru says the Alicyclic Hydrocarbon composition of this fluid may be attacking the rubber causing it to dissolve. Ethylene-Propylene materials are typically not compatible with petroleum based products and liquids. The hydrocarbon composition is petroleum based. This is different from the ethylene glycol heat transfer fluid we referenced to select the ethylene-propylene elastomer material spec'd out.
It is very likely that the original OEM bellows we reverse engineered would behave the same way. We scanned the original material and we matched the closest compound we have.
If the "issue" is something different, give me some feedback and I will try to help. Otherwise, don't use the cargille fluid and suggest what most of the other people are using.
So For future reference do NOT use this Cargill stuff!!!
Now I wonder what that stuff will do to Circuit boards?
Athanasios

hey Nash, I just checked and Sulfuric Acid has an AWESOME refractive index. Will you warranty your bellows if I pour that in?

I still fail to understand why people do not just use what the original designers intended. Glycol with perhaps some glycerin....
If fungus is an issue I would try adding a few drops of fungicide.

I didn't think the "fungus" that we talk about was really fungus, but kind of a misnomer for the result of a reaction with the exposed aluminum in the mounts over time. Is there actual fungus in LC chambers?

Some want to try to experiment to see if there is something better. Nothing wrong with that. For those that want to stick with the tried and true, the formula is well known.

Which then dissolves in the coolant, makes it cloudy, and also deposits on the c-element and tube face.
That's what I thought... Tom just threw me off with his "fungicide" remark.

I have seen both, the oxidation and true Fungus. the fungus will grow on the glass tube face and on the C-Elements.
And man does that crap stick tot he glass!! had to use a scotch bright to get it off.

How do you know it's actually fungal growth, Athanasios? Please note - I'm not questioning or contradicting you, but rather wondering how it even happens.
I haven't taken any biology since college, so I'm probably almost as ignorant as they come on the subject, but I'm just wondering how the tubes remain essentially clear for say, 6-8 years, then somehow fungal spores start reproducing and grow in the glycol. Again, not suggesting it can't happen; rather just wondering if anybody knows how it does.

Well in the Marquee if you ever had to change the glycol for any reason the fill hole area might be a place for
it to enter. it might be on the outside of the chamber and if not cleaned thoroughly any bacteria etc might contaminate
the new glycol as its being passed through the fill hole. This is just a theory.
I'm about 95% sure what i saw on the one tube I changed out at Greg's place here in western NY was Fungus.
It was growing on the glass and not on the Anodized aluminum. Also it was different in color to the oxidized
aluminum which also formed a crystalline structure . The stuff on the glass was slimy to the touch, almost like the feel
of algae on rocks in a creek.

I had a bad case of crystals forming in the chamber... hell in white scenes like watching hockey! These blue blobs would move across the screen! Looking in the lens they kinda look pretty.

Somehow I missed most of this thread back in April. Can some one send me some of these crystals next time they swap-out fluid? Same, too, for scrapings of the "fungus" slime. Include some of the fluid in both cases, too, if convenient. Just PM and send to:
