Attached is the msds for the Cargille index matching fluid that I would like to use in place of glycol. Do any of you dudes know if the material the bellows are made out of would be more likely to fall under the list of compatible or non-compatible rubbers listed in msds? thanks.

why the hell would you put such a toxic brew in your tubes? Even under the OK list it shows a 10 month immersion before it starts eating the material regardless.

As far as visible spectrum and compatibility goes, this should be better than glycol based on the refractive index someone mentioned for c-elements. As for issues with the bellows themselves, I forgot what Nash was using for the material. You could ask him to ask the manufacturer about any potential problems.
Draganm,
I don't see where it says it fails after ten months. It says ten months immersion and that is it.

No. The original bellows are 99% silicon which have a lower vapour transmission than the new ethylene-propylene material we use in our replacement bellows. Ethylene-propylene has a 7.5 times larger vapour transmission number. This means that these new bellows will not absorb moisture from the air and transfer it to the glycol which then causes the increase in pressure resulting in leaking and/or sweating. |
This is from Nashou's Bellow page on the products for sale page.

Don't you need any silicone to glue the bellows to the tubes? Silicone is on the list.

I think I will try it. I have some more of this stuff (small quantities) if anyone is interested in experimenting (free).

I wouldn't use RTV silicone for the bellows to the metal housing or C-element unless its not a smooth surface. The compression of the sealing ribs on the bellow is enough to make a tight seal. This also helps if for some reason you have to change the glycol. Some users have had fungus grow right away due to either not cleaning the bellows before installing them or not cleaning out the fill hole screws and
hole before adding Glycol.

don't yell at me, just asking | IWASN"T YELLING, THIS IS YELLING
I just don't think using an aggressive solvent is a good idea, that's all

Athanasios | I really don't think it's fungus, I have had it happen and it starts as a crystal looking growth then turns cloudy.
I really think at this point every old LC chamber should be sealed with epoxy paint before new bellows and coolant are added.

I would love to try some out, but I am not sure if Barco and Sony used silicone. Send some to Nash. He may be busy, but once he gets a chance he could test it. Plus, it is a nice gesture since he is offering free replacement of the bellows.

Soooooo I put my minty tubes and my minty new c-elements and my minty new bellows together, a few months ago and added the Cargille index matching fluid stuff. Also did the power suppy mod at this time. Put everything back together plugged it in, turned it on and............................thats when i finally understood what you guys mean by low emmissions. ugg.
So I let it sit in the garage while looking for some used tubes I could afford..........yesterday. I noticed the puddle. Looks like the bellows almost melted? severely stretched? The first one that I took apart had no rips or tears- just looks deformed.

WOW, Can you send me a sample of the Fluid you used and one of the bellows back and I'll send you a replacement set.
I want to give the fluid to Apple Rubber for testing. they said this material should hold up to most liquids.
Also pull out the any boards that might have got that Cargil stuff on them!! Damn no one else use that stuff!!!
PM me your address, I'll send out the new bellows on Monday.

Just looked more closely at the PDF file it says not compatible Silicon Rubber, this material is a mixture of that from looking at past emails between apple rubber and I. It is better than the original bellows but not made for that Cargil stuff it seems. It be interesting to see what Dale will say. First set that failed from over 200 bellows sold!!

hopefully the bellows is all it ate. Could come in handy though as paint stripper or to dissolve the body's of people you'd like to murder

I still use the best stuff available. Lab grade mixture copied from the original barco replacement. Going strong for a few years and no sign of degradation.
Why people try to use alternatives if the original is still available.

I am interested in what you are using. Where do you get your materials for the mixture you are using?
Thanks,
Steve
