OK, we get the picture... $150 is too high. Fine. But, I still want to hear from a couple of you (especially you, Mac)... Given all that's involved, what would be a fair price?

Oh, and Mac... How long does it take you to do the Pioneer repair? Because $75 sounds awfully cheap to me considering the expertise involved, and the time it probably took you to research and develop the fix to begin with. If the parts are $20, and you spend even an hour doing the repair and dealing with return shipping, then you're working too cheaply, IMHO. You're time is a limited resource, your expertise is very specialized, and short of junking the receiver, you're probably one of the only games in town. I'm not saying you can charge anything, but $75 does seem cheap to me.

Well if you take the price of the Dallas, lets say it's costing him 20 bucks (thats the higher side depending on what speed chip he's using), then the padded envelope and a couple stamps at around 3 bucks but I'll round up to 5 bucks, its safe to say that 25 bucks is non profit. I'll even round up to 30 bucks.

So 150 bucks minus 30 bucks leaves 120 bucks profit.

Now I'm sure he already owned a programmer so you can't really include that in the price.

So whats involved? Connect your programmer to your PC and select your software (1 minute). Open customers envelope and place chip in programmer (30 seconds). Select your chip from the menu and click read, then save file to location, then write down 4 digit number (1 minute 30 seconds). Remove chip and place in new chip (30 seconds). Select chip, select file to load, write to chip, read chip to verify write, compare 4 digit number (2 minutes 30 seconds). Remove chip and place in envelope, address it and place stamps (1 minute). Walk to mail box and insert (5 minutes if its cold or a long walk).

So thats 12 minutes if my quick math is correct. Lets even say 15 or 20 minutes to be fair.

So 120 bucks for 12 minutes. Just seems a little high to me, lol. But, if you have people willing to pay then more power to you I guess.

The whole idea of providing a service for a fee is to make money. If you don't like the charges then don't buy them.
Most shops do have a minumum fee for anything. My minumum for anything is $147.50. If I go to someones house for a no heat call and some nim-rod has shut of the emergency switch by accident and all I had to do is flip it back on, you guessed it. If it's at night, I tack on another $50.00 fo after hour charges Wink

The more I think about this I guess I have to admit that if he offering a service and people are willing to pay what he requests then there's nothing wrong with that.

I digress.

The fact that some people are willing to pay doesn't automatically make the price fair... It could still be ridiculous, but some are just willing to pay a "ridiculous" price...

But, I'm still waiting for somebody to tell me what IS a fair price given all that's involved. Would $100 be fair? $75? I don't know... I'm just asking.

My .02 it is a little high but hardly thieving. I always expect to pay a minimum of 75-125 an hr for work or just as a service call. That's what I charge for a service call $125 just to show up and then depending on the work, 35-75 an hour.

Service calls are different though. You invest time and money in fuel and such just to go there and then look at something. I really dont know what someone else should charge for this.

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay. I do think I saw that he has sold two. Obiously someone found it of value.
Now if you think that $150.00 is sooo bad, what about the price of "blendszilla"? That's such a deal I think I'll take two Laughing What about some of these Marquee board mod/maintanence prices??? What a deal those are Wink
To listen to some of you, you'd think the guy had you down on the ground with his knee on your throat while he was picking your pockets Twisted Evil

I don't care if it's $50.00, $150.00 or $1,500.00. He's very clear about what he's giving you for the money and only you have to decide if it's what you are willing to spend.

If you don't like it, DON"T BUY IT!!!

It's as simple as this: Post an eBay auction and offer the service for less.

Why hasn't this been brought up? When you are self employed you get to pay the whole 14% social security/ medicare deductions plus 15 - 25%, or more income tax on your profit. So Uncle Sam ends up with a pretty big chunk of whatever one earns. That makes everything cost more.

One already famous painter, received a paint request from a group of bussinesman. He accepted and make them wait for it in his living room for about a 4 hours.
When he finish it, the group where happy for the paint, but when they ask for the cost, the painter said "One million dollars". They argue "We think Is a lot of money for 4 hrs of work". The painter reply : "I'm not charging for 4 hrs of my work, I'm charging you for 20 years it cost to me knowing how to paint it in 4 hrs". They paid full for the paint. (True Story). At the end, "expensive" is always relative.
