I sat down during some free time yesterday and watched Across the Universe I picked it up on Blu-ray because at the time it was like $10. You can get it now for $12 at Amazon.

I didn't know anything about this movie and went into it with open eyes. Hell be damned that I knew it was a musical. I thought it would be some singing, I guess, but more along the lines of the 1996 version of Romeo + Juliet. This movie is simple, playing a period of the 1960's with music from the Beatles.

Visually, it is an appealing film and the Blu-ray is a nice treat considering what I paid for it, but the audio, while I like the Beatles, seemed hammered-flat by the Dolby Digital True HD. I am not sure if this would have done better, as a musical, in DTS HDMA, but I know what I had to do to hear the damn thing.

Very colorful in the artistic approach, and this is a first work I have seen of Julie Taymor (director). I had been looking forward to the upcoming The Tempest and was surprised it is by the same director.

And if you are a fan of Evan Rachel Wood from True Blood then you will be pleasantly surprised as she plays the lead female character, Lucy. I was definitely left with the strong desire to buy the soundtrack of this film--if it is available. Maybe then I could hear it. Still, it is entertaining watching the characters in the film sign these songs.
