After football season is over I was thinking about taking another shot at getting my pj UP to 1080P, I LOVE the PQ I get now at 1080I , I really do. But you guys know how this disease affects us. MORE, BETTER ETC.
Well i was looking at PJ stats and noticed that it said I could lose sharpness at 1080P, and was wondering if it was worth
all the effort as it is not easy for me like it is you guys. I just dont have your know how in this area, when I tried last time
I gave up after about a week and SETTLED for 1080I.Don't get me wrong, I love my picture but the disease beckons....
All opinions will be appreciated.

What is your refresh rate with 1080I? Once on my marquee 7500 I did a comparision between 1080P@60Hz and 1080I@96Hz. The P wasn't bad, but the I was way much better looking, and even flickered less.

Then you're probably feeding it 60Hz. What's your signal source? Each source (PS3, BluRay player, HD satellite box, etc) can present a different rate to the projector.

Here's the first question to answer, Jeff: Do 1080i scan lines bother you at your seating distance? If not, then you're setting far enough back you can't see them, and/or your optical and electronic focus aren't that good. In either case, there's no reason to go to the trouble of setting up 1080p and pushing to get everything optimized to show the difference between 1080i and 1080p.

So, can you see 1080i scan lines when you're in your sweet spot seat?

ECRABB,
No I dont ever see any scan lines, even when I moved the seats to about 12 ft away.
Normally we sit back almost 20 ft.
All I run into it is a BD and a OTA TUNER I have a sat box hooked up but its not HD so I seldom watch it.
I do get an occasional flicker on the BD. I wish I knew why.

Not that I'm an expert tweaker, but I put a Lumagen scaler into my system about 3 years ago, and fed it my 1080i/60 signal from my HD box and dialed my stock slightly worn tube 9500 in to 1080p/60. I can't say I saw a difference, but 99% of my time is spent repairing boards, not doing tweaking, so take my opinion FWIW.

well here's my sorta-expert opinion. First thing you need to do is ge ta set of Binoculars so you can actually see the picture, then start tweaking. Wink
seriously at 20, or even 12 feet back I doubt you will see any difference between resoutions unless yuo have Eagle eye's 20/10 vision.[/s]

Depends on the screen size. 12' would be really close to Arnold's 26' wide screen. Very Happy With my 100" diagonal screen, which is just about 87" wide, 12' is a bit too far for my tastes. 12' is 144", that's 144/87 = 1.66x screen width away. Many of us here sit at 1.4x (87*1.4 = 10') or so because we like a big, immersive image.

That's my same screen size, Jeff... I sit about 10 feet away, or about 1.2x screen widths.

OMG, if you really sit 20-feet away from your 8'-wide screen, that's way, way, way too far back, Jeff... THX specs say the viewing angle in the back row in a movie theater - the worst seat in the house - should be no less than 36 degrees; yours is down in the 24 ballpark. To put it in perspective, your viewing angle is similar to the one in my living room where I watch a 42" LCD from seven feet away. Yuck.

Hell, at that distance, not only can you not tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p, you can probably barely tell the difference between 720p and 1080i!

Jeff, you're missing out on the best part of a front projection system: The big picture!!!

If you cant see the scan lines of 1080i on that size screen from 10 feet away.... you either need glasses or really need to do a better set-up. Wink

Or maybe both? Razz

And I second Dragan's post from 20' you need binoculars.

Yeah, that too... I can easily see 1080i scan lines from my seat at ten feet. In fact, they're probably as sharp as 480i scan lines were on my old 1271. That's why I went with 1080p on this machine - completely to eliminate the very visible scan lines. With 1080p, it looks like 35mm film. Love it.

If you're not seeing any scan lines at 1080i, then you have some serious optical or electronic focus issues... The G70 should make some pretty damn sharp scan lines.

well, maybe I'll wait to move the furniture until I do another set up.
I'll try to get some scan lines @ 10 ft.
