A friend of mine bought recently a new Da-lite Hi-power screen (16/9, base 3 m. (118")) for his table mounted Marquee 9500 and is really enthusiast. Very high brightness (he measured about 14 FtL on 100 IRE windowed pattern), better focus and contrast no hot spot and little to no change to black levels. He says it's like to have a projector with black level, low IRE performance and absence of motion artifacts of a CRT with brightness and focus ability of a digital: the best of the two worlds.
I know this kind of screens has severe limitations in order of projector positioning (for its carachteristics of reflectivity, the eye line has to be very close to lens line, i.e., the projector has to be table mounted), but anyway looks very, very interesting, expecially for big screens, and even a nice solution for an eventual 3D set-up.
Has anybody any first hand experience about this screen?

I think Dragan uses an HP screen with his marquee.

Hello

Some passive polarized 3D setups require lenticular aluminum surfaces or the polarization is lost.

Tim, can you expound on this in terms a 6 year old could understand?

The HP is one of my fav screen materials and I'd still be using it if I had a floor mounted pj. Surprisingly very little color shift of hot spotting for such a high gain.

nope, I took in on trade a Draper Onyx White 1.3 gain and love it. I have recomended and seen at least 3 HP screens though, all Dalite model B roll ups. If I didn't have the draper I might very well have this.
I really like the screen, a little color shift from left to right side of the room, one side of the room it shifts warmer, the other side cooler but it's uniform across the screen and not a problem IMO. It does look sharper and it's certainly brighter within the (+/- 20 degree ?) viewing cone.
My only complaint I saw in a HT that was a living room attached to other parts of the house is it's susceptible to stray light. I mean ANY light leaking into the room from will be picked up by the screen and washes it out a lot more quickly than other materials. In a dedicated HT this is not a problem.
like anything else HT this screen is either you love it or hate it type thing, most people will love it.

I am looking to buy a new screen to replace my current 1.0 gain screen. I was looking at the Carada Brilliant White 1.4 gain. Any idea how this compares?

I haven't looked at Carada psersonally but some Carada screen had awful reviews, their cinema white was truly awful lots of color shift and something like 30% of the light actually leaked through the screen.
however the brilliant 1.4 seems to have gotten lots of Kudo's. Suffers from the 1 problem as HP though, not good at rejecting stray light. Other than that $700. for a fixed screen with velvet covered Alum frame is a good deal.

So, for CRT projectors (ceiling mounted), what would be the best moderately high gain screen (say 1.4-1.8)? Currently I have a 1.0 gain screen and I am looking for a little bit more light.

I hoped my new tubes would give me that, but they are not much brighter than the old tubes.

If all you want are those sort of gain numbers I'd consider the HP, even if ceiling mounted. Try to keep the angle to a minimum and you'll still see increased gain, just not as much for a retro-reflective type screen.

Henry and I messed around with HP big style around 7/8 years ago...great for a floor mounted PJ...but NOT for ceiling mount PJ...not under any circumstance...

I use the same Screen as Draganm...Draper Onyx 1.3...but I picked up a screen research a while back..just wainting in the loft for me.
