Damn this temporal Amnesia of mine!
At least I know one day...when I visit...it's Tom's pad I need to ask to use...and AR's car to borrow....
AR please tell me it's 'Your' car in the Avatar..and that you dont actually drive a 1970 AMC Pacer? (yeah i'm fussy bout these thing's). |
Nope not mine but I do have a 1968 Charger laying around. Not as shiny as that one though.
Never has a 1970 pacer but I did have a '72 AMC Javelin

So...like I said..I knew this unit...I had not installed it, but went sometime after..to fit a Crystalio 2 scaler to it..for this Very wealthy guy...
I ended up wiping the unit..moving it a couple of inches sideways, and a whole bunch of inches closer to the screen...it had already done over 3000 hours in it's poor position
Anyway...this unit...now some 3 or 4 years later was up for sale...but once more £5k...with over 6,000 hours...hmmm
So...we left it...time ticked by..and...suddenly..the lowest houred unit in the country..a unit I had installed..came up for grabs...a little over2-300 hours..bought brand New from Henry...installed and set-up by me...
So...what was the snag?...£8,500.00 GBP...that's what, I told Billy this may be as good as it get's...but if his pockets are not deep enough?
Some of you guy's..who happen to watch eBay may have seen some of the above mentioned units come and go ?
I think we had started the give up hope...but Billy was amazed with the Hot-Rodded 808 I sold him...and said it was almost as good as his Cine 9, let me just say here..that 808 was the best I have ever seen..bit of a unique build..and combine that with Billys Cine 9 ..whilst being good..never was as good as it should have been....
Should he break his unit for parts?...well last Summer..a customer called me...said he was thinking of going ''Digital' (carefully places a crisp £20.00 note into the swearbox) He had the unit with just 1,100 hours on it..from henry..and the unit had been in Barco's entrance lobby..in Kuurne in Belgium., and used for a bunch of shows etc.
Henry got offered the unit..saw that the green had a hint of wear...not good enough for a Bugatti Veyron to have even the slightest bit of 'piston slap' so Despite just the green showing wear..3 New tubes weere fitted, and off it went to this customer I mention above.
He had a dedicated building for his movie room..but very rarely used it..I would go there..to change this..or tweak that..and each time the room would be fillied with Junk..just like a lock up etc...
So 5 years had slipped by..since my buddy Gav and I installed this 'Veyron'...and now he wanted to change it for digital?? I told him he had a stunning projector..which he had not used much in as far as getting some of his mony's worth out of it...but his mind was made up..get me a "£$%^&* unit...and see if I can sell this Cine 9 on.. I want about £9-10k for it..I paid £22k...so it must be worth it?
Sadly I explained to him, that in 5 years..CRT prices had altered somewhat, whilst 'possibly' worth it..he wouldnt get that kind of figure...so he revised his pricing.
I needed to go there to fit the "£$%^&* so said to Billy..come with me..I need to take the cine 9 down..but before I do we can run it...and chack it over..it may help you pitch on offer based on what you see..it's the last time anyone will see it set up and working before they part with their cash..
We arrived..fired up the beastie...let it warm up..ran some HD from the Crystalio 2 hard drive...and stood in awe of the PQ...I jumped on my steps...to check the hours..what?? 1,300??...but that's just 200 hours on the New tubes..in 5 years!

Tom....Patience..patience...let me get some Egg into this pudding.
Well..ideally, Billy only really had £2-3k to spend..but he knew he wasn't going to get this Baby for that..so had to be more realistic...and the seller...well..he realised £9-10k was also a tad unrealistic..I stepped out and left them to it..my duty was done..to help both my friend Billy...and also a loyal customer.
So I guess you may be able to figure out the price from the above..not perhaps the place for me to mention it here...but needless to say...the Cine 9 came home to Norwich with us..and everyone was happy..the Sun shone through the tress...the Bird's chirrupped..and....
THE END
It was now an ideal scenario for Billy..he had a mint Cine 9..and a running (but less than 100% healthy) Cine 9 to pick parts from.
I installed it for him two day's later..Gav came over to see it..and everyones jaw hit the floor...I kid you not, in fact I must tempt my Buddy Gav on to the forum..he can tell you his opinions..and some great stuff too...I re-built his Vision 1 for him maybe three years ago...
A 'GOOD'(and I do stress good) Cine 9 is a devastating piece of machinery...but so too is a 9500...Sony G90 et al.
At the moment..the workshop has some nice PJ's in it...3x V1...and maybe...just maybe a GOOD Cine 9 too.....a 9500 in my lounge..and a real nice tricked up 808s i'm finishing off....
This makes it sound like CRT mania all over again...but in truth..I keep my hand in...but it's not normaly like this...not these day's.

Ah ha...so is it a case of rubbing salt in the wounds...is that where this goes?
Now...what gives? a man has 4 Cine 9's..and erm.less than 4 of them are working...now this sounds nearly as good as a crteaman story?

Well, Eric and I were bidding on two sets of 4 each Seos Prados 919's from a Government Liquidation site.
Eric lived close to the wear house and went over to have a looksy. he said they looked fairly good and they all had the HFQ900 lenses. well we Decided we'd each bid on a set and then split them up if we got one set.
I said I wouldn't go over 2500 USD, well Eric got all caught up in the adrenaline rush and went higher than i wanted and I bailed.
he ended up with all 4 . 2 he got up and running but the other two have some issues, not known yet as he hasn't had time and space to fully delve into the other two. Unless things have changed from a month ago I think that is where we stand with these.

Well..I guess I have 'hung' more Cine 9's than I can remember....and they are great...but people who approach me about them always get the same thing from me..."IF it goes wrong...and you ain't a Dentist...or a Surgeon...or you don't have a full spares donor just sitting there...ripe for the picking...then go to the nearest freeway...and hurls yourself in front of the largest..and fastest moving Truck heading your way"....
They are Heartbreakers..I kid you not....but if you have a full set of spares..as Billy does...that's a stress free life..for a cost...
G 90's...well...similar story..but not 'nearly' as suicide inducing as a Cine 9....
Play the thinking mans Card's....and you have a Marquee....stock...not breath-taking..but none to shabby...breathe heavy on em' and it's a whole different story.
Just talking 9's there of course....Barco 808s is..IMHO one of the best all round price vs smiles values ever built...just dont talk about how many box fulls of 762717 Quad and EHT board's you ain't got.....or splitters....

You ducked out of Seos units my friend?
Then all power to you...you had either the Wisdom of Yoda..or the luck of the fairy's to do so....Seos units are 'never' what folk think..
Seen far too many of them in my time at Senator Dilbeck's..oops..did I say that...I mean in my time at Henry's...
Different Controller modules..( ( I know of two Cine 9's whose controllers packed up..£££ ouch!) and Seos units are normally of NO use to us guy's for our uses...differences on Convergence tray's... and a host of other area's....

It's kind of funny I have 4 Barco projectors. Two 1209s models a BG 808s and a BD 808. I have spares but have never had to replace a single quad,EHT or splitter...............

Ps 919's are also NOT a Cine 9...not quite...if you don't hush box them..then you will all need to wear ear defenders..it will look like a scene from Top Gun when you watch a movie
Hell..you lot know all this anway...so I dont need to rev myself up about it for the 3,765th time in my life when people asked me the Seos/919 vs Cine 9 stuff...
Who the heck needs 180 scan rate and fan's that make a G70 owner think he has the most silent PJ ever made?..
Cine 9's are too noisy for me once they rev up after a few mins...
Ps don't dare think I don't like Cine 9's..I do ...devastating bits of kit..just like to tell it like it is..wart's and all...
